Lights dimmed in the gym. The smell of body odor. Boys on one side and girls on the other. Bet you're having flashbacks to middle school dances, right? If you're like myself, you probably cringe at the thought of how you were dancing, or whatever you were doing was called. Or maybe you even cringe at the thought of some teachers dancing. Middle school dances were the highlight of your month. You and your friends had a countdown going as soon as you heard about the dance. Middle school dances made you feel like the coolest kid ever. If you were in middle school from 2006-2008, these songs might give you some flashbacks.

1. "Smack That" by Akon.

We had no idea what we were singing, but we most definitely knew all the words.

2. "Low" by Flo Rida.

And we most definitely all got low, wearing our apple bottom jeans of course.

3. "Temperature" by Sean Paul.

Whenever this song was played, everyone started to dance faster and a little more spastically.

4. "1,2 Step" by Ciara.

We all tried to mimic her music video. Bonus points if you knew Missy Elliott's rap.

5. "Sugar, We're Going Down" by Fall Out Boy.

If you didn't know the words, you just fiercely played the air guitar.

6. "Crank That" by Soulja Boy.

If you new how to crank that, you were dancing right in the middle of the gym with everyone else. If you were like me, you were standing off to the side waiting for the song to finish.

7. "Yeah!" by Usher.

Yeah, yeah, yeah! Yeah, yeah! Yeah! Yeah, yeah, yeah! Yeah, yeah! Yeah

8. "Sexyback" by Justin Timberlake.

Yes you did, Justin.

9. "Hollaback Girl" by Gwen Stefani.

The only reason I can spell bananas to this day.

10. "Run It" by Chris Brown.

Bonus points if you actually ran around the gym.

11. "Stronger" by Kanye West.

Our voices got stronger during this song.

12. "Pop, Lock and Drop It" by Huey.

The reason why I have hip problems to this day.

13. "Cupid's Chokehold" by Gym Class Heroes.

You hoped one day your crush would sing this to you.

14. "Airplanes" by B.o.B.

Regardless if you loved or hated this song, you knew all of the words..

15. "Lipgloss" by Lil' Mama.

Every girl pulled out their lipgloss in unison.

16. "Boom Boom Pow" by Black Eyed Peas.

*Punches the air repeatedly with some hip motion*

17. "Snap Yo Fingers" by Lil' Jon.

*Snaps fingers for entire song*

18. "Girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne.

Sang this song in hopes of your crush hearing you from the other side of the gym

19. "Buy U A Drank" by T-Pain.

Great pickup line now that I'm 21.

20. "Walk It Out" by UNK.

Usually the sign the night was over so we "walked it out" of the gym to our cars, smiling and sweating and counting down the days until the next dance.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
