Halsey’s new album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, was released on June 2nd, 2017.
Since then, it has been named the first album by a woman to land No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2017. Whether you love her or you hate her, Halsey’s spunky, outspoken personality and bright blue wig are shining in the spotlight recently, and deservedly so.
With that being said, let’s take a look at some of Halsey’s best lyrics from her EP Room 93, her debut album, Badlands, and Hopeless Fountain Kingdom.
1.“And I promised myself I wouldn’t let you complete me // I’m tryin’ not to let it show, that I don’t wanna let this go // Is there somewhere you can meet me?” – Is There Somewhere
A classic tale of a girl who falls in love with a boy she knows is no good for her. Very relatable.
2.“We’re the underdogs in this world alone // I’m a believer, gotta fever runnin’ through by bones //We’re the alley cats and they can throw their stones // they can break out hearts, they won’t take our soul.” – Empty Gold
Like the lyric says, this song is for the underdogs out there, the people who think that love won’t last.
3.“All we do is drive // All we do is think about the feelings that we hide.” - Drive
Honestly, this whole song is so relevant, but this lyric stands out the most because this is something that we, as teenagers, do so often. Bad mood? Need to get away for a while? Got a lot on your mind? Get in your car, turn the music up and drive.
4.“I’m a wanderess, I’m a one night stand, don’t belong to no city, don’t belong to no man // I’m the violence in the pouring rain, I’m a hurricane.” – Hurricane
Recently, Halsey took to Twitter to discuss her discography with her fans. When asked on her thoughts about Hurricane, Halsey’s exact response was “I think if I had to represent myself in 1 song of my discography it would be Hurricane. I was in such a pure state of mind when I wrote it.” Hence why I had to include this lyric in my list, because there is something so pure and special about embracing who you are.
5.“You were red, and you liked me ‘cause I was blue // But you kissed me and suddenly I was a lilac sky // Then you decided purple just wasn’t for you” – Colors
I have been to many concerts in my life, including seeing Halsey live, and there is nothing quite as chilling or as beautiful as witnessing a crowd full of thousands of people, myself included, scream out these lyrics like their lives depended on it. And, for many, it did. Halsey’s lyrics about a romance that was loved and left has gotten some fans through even their hardest of breakups.
Note: In the Stripped version of Colors, the lyric Halsey sings in place of the one shown is “Art is not what I create // What I create, is chaos.”
6.“We wrote a story in the fog on the windows that night // But the ending is the same every damn time” – Strange Love
A failed romance becomes a bad habit on this track.
7.“But then your eyes had to wander, // ‘cause they weren’t looking at me, you weren’t looking for me.” – Haunting
As a whole, this song is one of my absolute favorites to belt out in the shower, but this lyric is so important because it pinpoints the exact moment when you realize things are going downhill in a relationship, and that significant other becomes nothing but a ghost to you.
8.“I think there’s a fault in my code // these voices won’t leave me alone // my heart is gold and my hands are cold” – Gasoline
If you ever need a badass, kickass song, this is most definitely it.
9.“And all the kids cried out, please stop, you’re scaring me // I can’t help this awful energy // God damn right, you should be scared of me // who is in control?” – Control
10.“Well I don’t let him touch me anymore // I said I’m not something to butter up and taste when you get bored.” – 100 Letters
There are few things more empowering than getting out of an unhealthy relationship, and there’s nothing more heartbreaking than looking back and wishing you had realized it sooner and wishing that you could take it all back. That’s what this lyric/song is all about.
11.“And when you start to feel the rush, a crimson headache, aching blush // and you surrender to the touch you’ll know, I can put on a show // Don’t you see what you’re finding // this is heaven in hiding.” – Heaven in Hiding
The beauty of knowing you have the upper hand.
12.“I know you’re dying to meet me, but I can just tell you this // Baby, as soon as you meet me, you’ll wish that you never did.” – Alone
13.“Don’t realize how mean I can be, ‘cause I can sometimes treat the people that I love like jewelry // Cause I can change my mind each day, I didn’t mean to try you on // But I still know your birthday and your mother’s favorite song.” – Sorry
This lyric is so real because we, as normal human beings, don’t always realize how much our actions and words can affect other people.
P.S. This song made me cry the first time I heard it, so I highly recommend that you check it out.
14.“Told my new roommate not to let you in but she’s so damn good with a bobby pin // Now you gone and played me like a violin, hittin’ these notes.” – Walls Could Talk
15.“Got a boy back home in Michigan, and it tastes like Jack when I’m kissin’ him // So I told him that I never really liked his friends, now he’s gone and he’s callin’ me a bitch again.” – Bad at Love
Typical. Boy is into girl until she leaves him, and then girl becomes every single derogatory term in the book.
16.“Look, I don’t mean to frustrate, but I always make the same mistakes, yeah // Always make the same mistakes // Cause I’m bad at love.” – Bad at Love
This one is pretty self-explanatory. Also, there is a reason this song has two different numbers… check it out.
17.“Said that we’re not lovers, we’re just strangers // With the same damn hunger // To be touched, to be loved, to feel anything at all.” – Strangers
This song is special because, as Halsey has talked about in her interviews, it is the first song she has penned and recorded using same sex pronouns. Halsey and her duet partner, Fifth Harmony's Lauren Jauregui, are both openly bisexual women. Besides the cultural importance of the song, it’s just a plain ol’ jam.
18.“You said I’m too much to handle, you said I shine too bright // I burnt the candle, flew too high.” – Devil in Me
This lyric resonates with me because being “too much” is a phrase I have heard my whole life. It’s nice to know that I’m not the only one.
19.“Cause you know the truth hurts, but secrets kill." – Hopeless
20.“Cause you know the good die young, but so did this, so it must be better than I think it is. // Gimme those eyes, it’s easy to forgive.” – Hopeless
Forgive and forget.
There you have it, folks. Some of Halsey’s best lyrics, spanning throughout her discography. Scream them in the shower, blare them in the car, hell, use them for selfie captions. But please, just appreciate the wonder that is Halsey.
