I'm not sure what my favorite genre is. I'm even constantly debating my favorite artists and bands. When someone asks those questions, I feel my response is often along the lines of, "Can you please specify what day it is, or what I'm doing at the time?
Am I doing homework and needing some chill vibes or am I rocking out on my way to work?" I need specifics! But, I find that there are certain songs that I will never tire of. No matter the day, their meaning and sound are enough to put a smile on my face, even on my worst days. Without further ado, here are the best songs ever.
1. American Pie
Don Mclean__Folk Rock
The words have been thoroughly memorized and combed over carefully, and they still stun me every time.
2. Slipping Away
Switchfoot__Alternative/Christian Rock
Pure poetry and a beautiful sound that is perfect for 70-degree weather with the windows down.
3. The Sound of Sunshine
Michael Franti & Spearhead__Reggae
Every time I listen to this, I start dancing and very promptly make a fool out of myself.
4. Big Yellow Taxi
Joni Mitchell__Folk
I would qualify this as the most happy-go-lucky (and-still-vaguely-depressing-but-ignore-that-part) song you can possibly find.
5. Viva La Vida
Coldplay__Baroque Pop
Try as I might, I can't get over the beauty of mixing classical sounds with pop.
6. Unforgettable
Nat King Cole _Vocal Jazz
Specifically, the version where his daughter records her voice with his. It's perfection!
7. The Sound of Silence
Simon & Garfunkle__Folk
Vocals. Harmony. Poetry. Chills up your spine. Need I say more?
8. Monday, Monday
The Mama's & The Papa's__Folk Rock
Try to contain your excitement as that dreaded day of the week is summed up perfectly in this song.
9. Oh, Pretty Woman
Roy Orbison__Rock and Roll
Because if you don't crack up at least once while singing this song, are you even human?
10. House of Gold
Twenty One Pilots__Alternative/Folk
Pretty much any time they play the Ukelele, I'm in.
11. Carolina in my Mind
James Taylor__Folk
How can a human voice possibly sound that good?! Also, I recently discovered that he's still alive, so kudos to him.
12. Owner of a Lonely Heart
Yes__Progressive Rock
This band can do no wrong.
13. Desperado
Eagles__Rock
Shoot me in the heart, why don't you.
14. Dancing in the Moonlight
King Harvest__Pop Rock
And the hippies go wild.
15. Jungle
Tash Sultana__Alternative/Indie
Pretty sure her voice is magic. Also, guitar.
16. Colder Heavens
Blanco White__Folk
Actually, anything this singer does is practically perfect in every way.
17. Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars
Stacey Kent__Jazz
It's midnight and you can't sleep. Wait, news flash: now you can, because you're listening to this amazing woman's voice.
18. Roll Up
Fitz and The Tantrums__Alternative/Indie
All I have to say is that ya'll have some pretty sick vibes in your music.
19. Diane Young
Vampire Weekend__Indie Rock
Oh, hey look, drums. Sounds like my jam.
20. Minimum
Charlie Cuningham__Alternative/Indie
My current favorite song, which will probably turn into a small, lifelong obsession.
