"1989:" From a Diehard Fan's Perspective

My view on Taylor Swift's new album, "1989."

"1989:" From a Diehard Fan's Perspective

As a diehard Taylor Swift fan for the last eight years, I have been counting down the days until tonight, when "1989," her fifth studio album was released. This is her first official pop album, as opposed to country-pop, and is inspired by the music of the last 80's.

Before the album's release, I was nervous about how these changes would effect the style that her fans knew so well and loved. However, this album did not disappoint. It has everything Swift has always put in her albums: honest lyrics, emotion, and catchy tunes, but with a more modern, crowd-pleaser feeling. Here, I have put the songs in order from my favorite to my least favorite, but they are truly all excellent.

1. "Blank Space" This song has a catchy beat and sounds like Swift's old style, with an alluring twist that abandons her old innocence. She catches your attention with stand-out lines like, "Cause darling I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream" and the end of each chorus, "But I got a blank space baby/And I'll write your name."

2. "Shake It Off" 1989's first single came out in August, and is currently number one on iTunes and seems to be playing everywhere at all times. While the lyrics are repetitive and a little gimmicky ("the hater's gonna hate, hate, hate, hate"), this song is catchy and has great intentions. Swift is telling her fans to shake off the haters because they just ignore the positives and focus on your negatives.

3. "Wildest Dreams" This song reminds me of Lana Del Rey's, "Without You," in a good way. Its lyrics seem to be about sex, and it sounds very different than most of Swift's other songs, but she does not abandon herself completely and it is something her fans can still love.

4. "Clean" Moments in this song remind me of Swift's best moments in "Red," sounding like "The Lucky One" with her emotional voice from "All Too Well." It is a great last song, with the last line, "I think I'm finally clean" eluding to her getting over the relationships that haunted her throughout the album.

5. "Style" This song starts like many of her songs, with a tormented story about driving and burning flames, but it picks up in the chorus on a more positive note, talking about her and her man's classic style, with a catchy tune. I can picture her and Harry Styles's doomed, yet intriguing, relationship just listening to this song.

6. "Out Of The Woods" This song's haunted tone makes up for the repetitive chorus. It is speculated that it is about her failed relationship with Styles, and it follows the song "Style" perfectly by sounding even more doomed. Listen to it once and it is impossible to get this song out of your head.

7. "I Know Places" This song is one of the most affected on the album, but her voice has some pleasantly honest moments, especially in the bridge. The beginning and end sound too pop to be a Swift song, but the rest of the song does not abandon her old style.

8. "This Love" This is the slowest song on the album, and reminds me of a mix of "Treacherous" and "All Too Well." It shares the same haunted vibe with other songs on the album, but these seem to be the ones I like the best.

9. "Bad Blood" This song, reportedly about a backstabbing fellow celebrity (Katy Perry?), is fun and unique. It reminds me of a more mature and controlled version of "Better Than Revenge." While the maturity is good, it lacks emotion in a song that could be full of it.

10. "I Wish You Would" This song's lyrics are disappointingly familiar, starting at 2 am in a car with an ex-boyfriend. The chorus is catchy, but it does not stand out.

11. "How You Get The Girl" It is not particularly original or exciting, but it sounds like a typical Swift song that any fan would like.

12. "All You Had to Do Was Stay" I am not impressed with this song. It sounds like a more pop-electronic version of some older, ineffective songs of hers, but even more boring.

13. "Welcome to New York" Like the rest of the songs on "1989," this song is catchy. However, that is all it has going for it. The lyrics bother me, with the repetitive chorus saying "welcome to New York, it's been waiting for you" over and over again and generic lines about the bright lights and not wanting to change anything even though it can drive her crazy.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
