If someone were to ask you what the soundtrack to your life should be, you could pretty much pick anything by The 1975 and have it be relevant. Their lyrics' true meaning might not be immediately obvious to a young, naive mind, but that's what's so great about them. No matter what your personal interpretation of the song is, chances are you can connect to it in one way or another.
I wish you'd walk in again / Imagine if you just did (from "Nana")
We've all experienced loss. If you haven't, I envy you more than you know. I've lost so much of my family, it almost doesn't seem real sometimes. Sometimes, even if only for a moment, we forget. We forget that they're gone and live in that blissful state of ignorance.
Hey kids! We're all just the same / What a shame (from "Paris")
I'm just going to be extremely cheesy and throw the "You were born an original, don't die a copy" quote out there.
I don't want your body / But I hate to think about you with somebody else" (from "Somebody Else")
No matter how long it's been since you parted ways, seeing someone you once loved with someone new is not something that anyone wants to do, even when you're "so over them." Your feelings don't just disappear one day. The reality is that over time, you simply learn to let go.
Stop pacing 'round the room / Using other people's faces as a mirror for you" (from "UGH!")
We can be so concerned with others' opinions of us at times. Even just while having a conversation with someone, you can tend to analyze their face in an attempt to read their perception of you.
You said I'm full of diseases / Your eyes were full of regret / And then you took a picture of your salad / And put it on the internet (from "Change ofHeart")
An ode to the social media and image-obsessed generation. We can get caught up in the twisted mindset that we have to keep up appearances and pretend everything is OK when it really isn't. Those people who post the artsy coffee pictures and enviable vacation snaps are the same people who have been in toxic relationships, lost loved ones, and gone through the toughest of times. They're just good at hiding it.
You've got a beautiful face but got nothing to say (from "Love Me")
Looks fade, brains don't (okay, maybe when you're really old, but you get the point). Your exterior will only get you so far in life.
I said "I love you" / What does it matter if I lie to you? / I don't regret it but I'm glad that we're through (from "The Sound")
Too often, we accept less than we deserve. Someone telling you what they know you want to hear does not entitle them to your heart, or any part of you. Don't regret your relationships, no matter how much you might want to. Most likely you learned something because of it, whether that be about people or, more importantly, yourself.
This must be my dream / Wide awake before I found you (from "This Must Be My Dream")
Eventually, you will find the person who makes you forget the past. The person who makes you realize why no one else has made you feel whole.
Don't fall in love with the moment (from "She's American")
It's easy to get caught up in the moment and let your emotions get the best of you. We fall in love with a feeling and spend our days trying to recreate it, blinded from seeing the whole picture.
If I'm lost then how can I find myself? (from "If I Believe You")
In this lovely adventure we call life, we are expected to make a whole lot of decisions at a very young age. At a certain point, you just feel so lost that you don't even know where to begin when it comes to figuring out what you want to "do" and who you want to be.
Get in the shower if it all goes wrong (from "The City")
Pretty self-explanatory, but showering just makes everything better.
I feel like I'm just treading water / Is it the same for you? (from "Antichrist")
Sometimes, you just feel stuck. Stuck in the same routine, doing the same things, with the same people, over and over. You also convince yourself that you are the only one feeling this way, totally alone.
I'll give you one more time / We'll give you one more fight (from "Robbers")
We all have that part of us that makes us want to forgive those who have hurt us, justifying it with "It'll be better this time" and "They won't do it again," knowing all too well that we are kidding ourselves. But time after time, we give them chance after chance in the hopes that it will work out.
You try chasing dreams, man it's harder than it seems (from "Woman")
Ask children what they want to be when they grow up and chances are you will hear answers along the lines of fireman, superhero, princess, pop star, etc. As we grow up, we come to realize that being a princess isn't necessarily the most attainable "career" and superhero powers won't put food on the table. To find a career that you genuinely love and can make a living with is the dream, but it's not always easy.
Hey now think about what to do, think about what to say, think about how to think (from "Chocolate")
We're all so wrapped up in what we should do, should say, and should think. Just do you.
Yeah so far, it's alright, alright (from "So Far (It's Alright)")
A more lighthearted note to end on. Life is full of ups and downs, but at the end of the day, it's pretty great.
