If you've never been to Lafayette, Tennessee, you may be a little confused the first time that you visit. It's a super small town, but it's pretty great. This small town is super close and everyone knows everyone, so I guess we have developed a few slang terms over the years. So, here's a few terms you need to know when you visit Lafayette for the first time. But if you're from Lafayette, here are terms you use on a daily basis.
1. "Meet at the pig."
What it means: Meet at Piggly Wiggly.
2. "Just take the old Hartsville Hill to get there."
What it means: An older road that runs into Hartsville and can pretty much get you where you need to go.
3. "You're being ill."
What it means: You're having an attitude, and you better stop before you make your mom angry.
4. "Bless their heart."
What it means: They're a mess and I totally feel for them, but it's all going to be okay.
5. "Let's go to town."
What it mean: Let's meet up and ride circles around the town square and Sonic.
6. "You know him–that's so and so's son."
What it means: Everyone knows everyone in this town. Meeting someone new without any relation to someone you already know is unheard of.
7. "I want some chicken la loma."
What it means: Chicken, rice, and cheese. Mostly called Arroz con pollo at other Mexican restaurants.
8. "All I'll be doing this summer is settin' Tobacca."
What it means: Literally, setting Tobacco plants.
9. "It's Frog Pond Friday."
What it means: The day locals gather at Frog Pond Barbecue.
10. "I ain't never heard such as that."
What it means: You are lying, and there is no way possible that what you're saying is true.
11. "Yeah, they're having revival this week."
What it means: A local church is having their week long service and everyone is welcome.
12. "I don't have DISH; I've got NCTC."
What it means: NCTC is a local cable provider–not a disease.
13. "Back in my day, we went to high school at LES."
What it means: A new high school was built, and the old one (LES) is now used as Lafayette Elementary School.
14. "I'll probably go get a plate from Hometown Foods/Value Plus.
What it means: I'll get lunch from a hometown grocery story and see Ms. Dixie.
15. "I'm going to Vol State."
What it means: I'm going to college in Gallatin at Volunteer State Community College.
16. "Man, I'm really craving some KOI right now."
What it means: I really want to drive to Gallatin, Tennessee for hibachi because we don't have it in Lafayette.
17. "Did you see what was in the paper about that?"
What it means: A topic of heated discussion was published in the Macon County Times or Chronicle.
18. "We are getting a Taco Bell!!!!!"
What it means: We got a Taco bell with no drive thru.
19. "Honey, I'm doin' just fine!"
What it means: This is the response you'll mostly like get when you asking someone how they are.
So, if you're going to spend time in Lafayette, make sure you know these terms, and you'll be just fine!
