An 18-year-old cheerleader from San Diego County is charged with assisting the murder of a homeless man. Hailey Suder allegedly helped her boyfriend Austin Mostrong (20) and boyfriend’s younger brother Preston Mostrong (19) cover up the murder of 50-year-old grandfather George Lowery.
Reportedly, a few days earlier Lawery caught the Mostrong brothers shooting paintballs at two men and stepped in to aid the men. Lowery had later told his wife that he took the paintball gun from the two Mostrongs which she believes prompted them to track down her husband and seek revenge. The next morning, Lowery’s wife found him under a piece of plywood, bound up and severely beaten. He survived four days in the hospital then passed away after a stroke.
The alleged attackers have pled guilty to the murder and torture charges. After the initial hearing in May, reporters say that there is no doubt of convicting the alleged guilty parties once the case is presented. If found guilty, the two young men will face life in prison. Their preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 26th.
Suder faces a minimum of three years and eight months in jail if found guilty for accessory to murder (downgraded from her initial murder charges. Friends of Suder say they are shocked at how she handled the situation and that her actions were far out of character for her. Her court date is on June 26th.)
Fundraising efforts for the family of George Lowery have been largely successful and are helping towards the expenses brought on by his death. Those who knew Lowery remember him for constantly smiling and always willing to go out of his way for other people.
“I think everybody involved deserves the max sentence,” says Ashley Ballum, a close friend of the Lowery family. Lowery friends and family want to show this horrific act of violence could have easily been prevented and want to see all those involved pay for their actions.
