Bellingham is a small town with big character. Among its many charms is its rich artistic community. No matter what kind of art strikes your fancy, chances are Bellingham has it. If you are new to the area or are just starting to become involved in the performing arts, it may be overwhelming knowing where to start to view and/or participate in performing arts. So without further ado, here are 20 ways you can kickstart your journey into Bellingham's performing arts world.
1. Improv.
Bellingham is home to the first-class improv company the Upfront Theatre. The Upfront was formed in 2004 by "Whose Line Is It Anyway" star Ryan Stiles. It features a variety of improvised shows, classes, and audition opportunities. Improv Playworks is another wonderful improv school. Founder Sheila Goldsmith offers fun, inviting classes for people at all levels.
2. Open mics and comedy.
If stand-up is your thing, venues such as the Green Frog feature weekly comedy shows like Guffawingham, which happens every Monday at 9:30 p.m. The shows are free and are a great opportunity to take a swing at an open mic, or just sit back and enjoy the hilarity. Poppes on Lakeway also hosts Comedy Nite which features both local and national comedians.
3. WWU classes.
You don't have to be a theatre or dance major to participate in Western Washington University's rich performing arts program. Their Department of Theatre and Dance offers introductory classes to all students, creating a great opportunity to dip your toes into the world of performing arts. 4. Bellingham film.
Bellingham is home to a small but vibrant film community. Bellingham Film is the perfect place to start if you are looking to get involved with film. There are many film festivals in the area, most notably the annual Bleedingham short horror movie competition.
5. Volunteer.
Volunteers are the power behind many of Bellingham's performance companies. Ushering, working backstage, or selling concessions is a great way to investigate various companies. Take a look at volunteering opportunities at organizations such as the Bellingham Theatre Guild or the Mt. Baker Theatre.
6. Dance classes.
From tap to salsa to swing and much more, there are dance classes for everyone. Some companies offering dance lessons include Bellingham Dance Company, ABC dance, and Opus Performing Arts.
7. WWU clubs.
Western Washington University has an eclectic variety of clubs including a cappella groups, Viking Radio Theatre, and Swing Kids. Browse current club opportunities on the Associated Students' website.
8. Live theatre.
Come check out the incredible talent showcased in Bellingham's theatre companies. The Bellingham Theatre Guild, the iDiOM Theatre, the Mt. Baker Theatre, and the BAAY Children's Theatre. There are shows for everyone to satisfy all your theatre needs.
9. Pickford Theatre.
The Pickford Film Center downtown screens both independent and more mainstream films. It hosts screenings of local talent for film festivals and also shows National Theatre Live, a live screening of acclaimed performances in England.
10. Whatcom Symphony Orchestra.
Founded in 1975, the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra is an acclaimed orchestra group. It showcases the talent of a wide range of skilled musicians and also offers volunteer opportunities.
13. Music venues.
Bellingham does not disappoint when it comes to live music. Local bars and clubs are great venues to catch some homegrown Bellingham music. Check out locations such as the Wild Buffalo House of Music, the Green Frog, and the Shakedown.
14. Farmer's Market.
The Farmer's Market isn't just for food! Local musicians often perform at the Market, allowing participants to enjoy their music and giving them an opportunity to showcase it. The Winter Saturday Market is held the third Saturday of January, February and March. Check their website for more details on hours.
15. Make.Shift.
Make.Shift is a unique gem of a venue. It focuses on music of an alternative, off-the-beaten track feel. It also gives space to visual artists of all varieties. In addition, Make.Shift has its own radio station and hosts a variety of performance events. Find specific events here.
16. Music lessons.
The Bellingham Academy of Music, located in downtown Bellingham, offers a variety of music lessons including guitar, voice, piano, cello, and more. Other places offering music lessons include Mojo School of Music and Wild Hare Music School.
17. Spookshop.
Located on Marine Drive, Spookshop caters to all your costuming. This is a great resource for performers and cosplayers of all varieties. They are all open year-round and also offer online ordering.
18. Whatcom Poetry Series.
The Whatcom Poetry Series is a non-profit organization sponsoring events related to the art of poetry. Poetrynight gives poets a chance to share their material with the public and the Sue C. Boynton Poetry Contest is an annual contest in which the winners get their work displayed in front of the Bellingham Public Library.
19. Storyteller's Guild.
The Bellingham Storyteller's Guild is a unique group dedicated to the tradition of oral storytelling. It meets regularly at the Fairhaven Library and also offers events and workshops. Telling stories through this group is a great way to work your performing muscles.
