Even with 20 years of Catholicism, Lent is still a struggle. Knowing you're not alone makes it a little easier.
1. Taking Fat Tuesday to a whole different level.
Oh, so I can stuff my face all day? Sounds like yesterday and the day before to me!
2. "I'm gonna give up alcohol for Lent."
Wait, Jesus drank wine. So, wine doesn't count.
3. Never knowing what to do when receiving ashes.
Priest: "Remember, O man, that you are dust, and unto dust you shall return. Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel."
Me: "Thank you. I mean same. I mean amen!"
4. Then comparing your ashes with your friends.
Me: "Yours looks perfect!"
Friend: "Yours is just a blob."
5. Half way to McDonald's and then realizing it's a Friday.
Please God, anything but the Filet-O-Fish!
6. Going to Confession for the first time in at least a year.
"Bless me father for I have sinned, it's been two years since my last confession."
7. Immediately feeling renewed and convincing yourself you'll never sin again.
Until you walk out and see someone wearing a weird outfit and immediately make a joke in your head. Back to the confessional you go.
8. Taking pride in knowing the stations of the cross in the right order.
"No, no, Jesus meets Veronica after Simon helps him."
9. High key loving to sing, "Were you there?"
" Ohhhhh, OHHHH, ohhhh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble."
10. Knowing that you can "cheat" on Sunday, but wanting to be strong.
Must. Resist.
11. Praying they don't pick you on Holy Thursday to get your feet washed.
Ain't nobody gonna want to touch these feet. I can't even afford a decent meal let alone a pedicure.
12. The annual watching of the "Passion of the Christ."
Thanks Mel, for destroying my heart every Good Friday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
13. Never knowing what to do on Holy Saturday.
I literally do nothing. There must be more to this.
14. Do I dare go to the Easter Vigil Mass?
If anyone as ever been, then you know how big of a time and mental focus commitment this is.
15. Waking up on Easter feeling renewed, but also directing going for the candy in your basket since it's been 40 days chocolate free.
16. Realizing that Lent is actually super beautiful.
"Wait. A man died for me. Me."17. Then realizing your heart is lit for the Lord!
Because you only live twice -- that's the motto sinner YOLT.
18. And finally, loving your faith even through the struggle of 40 days.
When in reality this is truly the least we can do for Jesus.
