18 Things You Know If You're From Middlesex

The borough inside of the county. Yes, we exist.

Many people do not know of our tiny town, but those who live there don't really know any place else. Our spirit lies in the fact that we have quirks -- a lot of them. We take pride in our uniqueness as a community. So, if you don't live in Middlesex, here's a glimpse into our small world. And if you do... well, enjoy reliving your childhood!

1. During middle school, the coolest way around town was riding your beach cruiser.

And each of your friends in your group had their own color.

2. You also lived at the duck pond.

The first time you climbed up on top of the “fireplace” in the boat house, you felt like you were on top of the world. Pictures absolutely had to be taken for proof. And the writings under the swings were too gross for us to have seen in middle school, but we still read and laughed at them anyway.

3. Formal was a big deal.

But if you bought the same dress as somebody else… forget it.

4. You have a very strong opinion on which is the best pizza place.

And we have a lot. Definitely way too many for a 3.5 square mile town.

5. You know the half apps menu at Applebee’s like the back of your hand.

You probably have a favorite spot to sit, too.

6. One accident happens and the whole town is a mess.

We only have two main roads; we can’t afford to close one of them!

7. The weird carnival that came to town for a week.

When you were younger, it was an exciting hangout, but as you got older, you only went for the food. The biggest mystery of all though: It took a week to set up, but only two days to disappear. (How?)

8. Halfway through freshman year, you knew every teacher in the entire school.

And they knew you, too, even if you weren’t their student.

9. We take Memorial Day weekend to the next level.

Prom weekend? Nah.

10. Your graduating class was very small.

And you knew every single person by first and last name.

11. The best part of graduating was "friending" all the teachers on Facebook.

As much as we complained, we love them.

12. You have at least three friends at Rutgers.

Some of them love it... others not so much.

13. And if they didn’t go to Rutgers, almost all of them stayed in New Jersey.

There are a few in PA, some in NY, but the majority are only an hour's drive.

14. You’re a member of the Facebook group.

Yes, our town has its own closed Facebook group. You know almost everyone that posts on it (or at the very least, their last name).

15. You can’t go anywhere without seeing someone you know.

The bank. Dunkin’. Walgreens. Literally anywhere.

16. You know that if you ever need anything, someone from town has your back.

We may be tiny, but when there’s someone in need, we’re mighty.

17. Everyone comes back.

You say that you wont. You say you want to move out as soon as you graduate. And you say that you hate it, but you also know that’s not true. You will come back. It’s like a black hole -- it will always suck you back in.

18. No matter what, Middlesex will always be your home.

And you absolutely love it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
