Different people do different things with their summers. Vacations, summer jobs, swimming, hiking, or, if you're like me, check out as many new movies as possible. So, today I am going to give my personal list of the best movies that go with the spirit of summertime. I'm not talking summer blockbusters, either, I'm talking about movies that just have to do with summertime, summer activities, or just the general summertime feelings.
1. Dazed and Confused
This 90s high school comedy doesn't have too much of a plot. It's just a good throwback to the carefree times of end-of-school-year celebrations: A good nostalgia trip whether you went to high school in the 70s or you're still in high school now!
2. Almost Famous
If you're a music lover, you probably couldn't think of a better way to spend your summer than shadowing a famous rock band for a write-up in Rolling Stone magazine. And that's exactly what young William Miller gets to do in this heartfelt film which shows both the glory and ruin of the world of rock-n-roll.
3. Adventureland
Jessie Eisenberg graduates college and must reduce himself to taking a job at an amusement park, only to discover that it's the perfect location for a great learning experience.
4. Do the Right Thing
The summer can produce hostility as well as laziness, as evidenced by this racial drama from director Spike Lee, arguably the most important film of 1989!
5. The Big Lebowski
Nobody turns laziness into an art form the way The Dude does in this classic cult comedy from the Coen Brothers!
6. The Goonies
I promise I haven't been specifically targeting R-rated movies, so here's one to break the chain: This classic Spielberg-produced adventure comedy about a group of boys searching for Pirate treasure in order to save one of their homes!
7. Stand By Me
Sort of the more mature answer to The Goonies. Four boys set out to find the corpse of a missing boy and instead find themselves...and also a dead body.
8. The Graduate
Dustin Hoffman finishes college and has one of the most unusual summers ever, to say the least...
9. Superbad
Sort of the Dazed and Confused/American Pie for 2000s kids. I like Dazed and Confused better than this, but I like this better than American Pie. Anyway, it's the hilarious journey of a duo's plans to get the booze, get the girls, and figure out how they're going to handle separation from each other this fall...
10. 500 Days of Summer
Because title!
11. Jaws
Because nothing will get you in the beach mode like a good shark attack!
12. Caddyshack
One of the most hilarious and quotable comedies of all time about those good ol' days on the golf course.
13. Friday the 13th
Nothing captures that true summertime spirit like going to summer camp and getting machete'd, am I right?
14. The Sandlot
Strange I waited so long for this one...I don't think I've ever seen a movie that better captures the joys of being a kid in the summer. It's got everything: Baseball, swimming, carnivals, etc. It may not be the best written or acted kids' movie out there, but it's still a great time!
15. The Way Way Back
Feeling a bit displeased having to spend the summer with his mother's jerk boyfriend, young Duncan finds a second family at the local water park who teaches him that he is a better guy than he thought.
16. Ernest Goes to Camp/Meatballs
Two 70s summer camp classics with two funny men in the leads (Bill Murray being a bit funnier than Ernest, of course).
17. The Parent Trap
Yes...I do like this movie and find it touching. Don't go judging me, I regret nothing!
18. National Lampoon's Vacation
I'll be honest, I haven't seen this movie, but I know somebody will get angry if I don't include it, so here it is!
