18 Life Lessons From Grandma

We moved my grandparents in with us when I was in sixth grade. Since then, I've spent nearly every morning sipping on coffee and crunching on a piece of toast with my grandmother. Eight years later, and I've learned some of life's most valuable lessons from the most amazing woman I have ever come across. So here are 18 things I've come to internalize over the years:

1. Always smile ... it'll make them wonder what you're up to.

2. Don't be afraid to show someone you love them.

3. Make time to dance in the kitchen late at night with the one you love.

4. Pray every night.

5. If he makes you cry, he's not worth your time.

6. Never go to bed angry... You never know what is going to happen.

7. It's okay to drink an entire pot of coffee by yourself. (Thanks for feeding my addiction, Gram.)

8. If someone doesn't like you, just smile... It'll either make them feel guilty or piss them off - and you win either way.

9. Fox News is always right... Some discrepancy there, though.

10. Quiet is never a good thing... Especially if you have kids around.

11. Music can heal your soul - listen to it everyday.

12. Cookies and milk is an acceptable meal.

13. Whatever you choose to do, do it with everything you've got.

14. Good friends make the best boyfriends (or girlfriends).

15. Never talk bad about someone... Even a fish who doesn't open its mouth can't get caught.

16. Sing your heart out - even if you're not good, it'll make you feel better.

17. Family is everything.

18. If you're going to give someone a hug, make it a Real Hug.

Cherish the moments spent with your grandparents because they know more than you think. Embrace the little things in life, and keep laughing. Some of the best memories are made when gathered around the table.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
