18 Things That Happen When Your Big Is Also Your Best Friend
Danielle McNary

I have always been the big sister in my family. I never had someone who I could count on for advice, I've always been the mentor to my five younger siblings. So getting a sorority Big sister was a big change for me. A sorority Big's job is to be their Little's mentor and to guide them through not only sorority life, but college life in general. I definitely needed someone like that, since my parents never went to college. I was especially lucky (or cursed, depends on the day), because I didn't just gain a Big sister last year, I gained a new best friend. Here are a few things that happen when your Big is also your best friend.

1. You never have to eat alone.

I can't tell you a time when my Big and I hung out and didn't go somewhere to eat. If we are together, we're probably at a restaurant.

2. You always have a study buddy.

And by "study buddy," I mean someone to browse Pinterest with while disturbing the rest of the library...

3. There are so many inside jokes.

Most of which you don't remember the source of.

4. You're never alone, even when you want to be.

"Hey, you wanna go eat?" "I need help with my stats!" "Guys keep asking me out and it's annoying, why was I cursed with beauty??" Those are some text messages I have received from my Big in the past few months. You can look forward to something like this every day.

5. Bickering is constant.

And most of the time it ends in hysterical laughter.

6. You always have someone to keep you in check (sort of).

My Big is always telling me I need to study, save money, etc...And I'm telling her the same things because neither of us have any motivation or self-control.

7. You always have someone to make fun of.

I make fun of my Big for obsessively washing her car, and she makes fun of me for ordering coffee with my 9 p.m. dinners. So it balances out.

8. Somebody knows your entire life.

And you know theirs. And you can hold that against each other.

9. You have a guaranteed drinking buddy for 20-fun.

Because what is a (legal!) drunken night of shenanigans without your Biggie?

10. You never run out of memories.

Like the time my Big made me watch a documentary about Orcas with her. (I didn't say they had to be pleasant memories).

11. Your wardrobe suddenly doubles.

If I'm wearing an abnormally cute top at a party, it probably came from my Big and I probably didn't ask before borrowing it.

12. You always have someone to complain to.

When a girl is being annoying at chapter, you better believe I'm making snarky comments about it to my Big.

13. And you always have someone to laugh with.

Even when absolutely nothing is funny.

14. There will never be a bad time for a photo shoot.

And you will retake every photo about 30 times.

15. You'll never have to worry about men.

Because you are both destined to become crazy cat ladies, but at least you'll be crazy cat ladies together.

16. You'll always have fun.

Even when you're walking aimlessly around the downtown mall because your lives are an empty void.

17. You'll always know all the gossip.

Because you and your Big tell each other everything.

18. Most importantly, you will always have a soul sister.

Even when you graduate and it is no longer cute to call her "Big," she will always be your best friend and that is a bond that can never be broken.

I love you, Biggie, even when you're making fun of me, or driving me up a wall. Thanks for being there for me always and for being such an important part of my life. Because a Little is nothing without her Big and I am nothing without my best friend.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
