When I tell people I am a journalism major, I can see the judgement in their eyes. Their expressions are telling me, “Hannah, are you crazy?” and “You are never going to get a job.” Once, someone even told me, “Journalism and media is a dying field. Good luck to you.”
First, I am not planning on going into the journalism field; I am on the pre-law track. However, I was absolutely disgusted that someone had the nerve to judge a group of people who consistently deliver to consumers and are often criticized for their work. Being a journalism major, or even a journalist, is not a walk-in-the-park. So, here’s a list of what actually goes through our brains on a daily basis. Believe me, there’s a lot going on up there.
1. We have a pen and paper on us 24/7.
2. You can never have too many notes.
3. Every journo major cringes every time they see a misspelled post on any social media platform. #nothanks
4. “How many minutes until deadline?” - every staff writer ever
5. We love asking questions. (about anything and everything)
6. Journalism majors are never afraid to talk to people, even random strangers.
7. We rely on technology almost as much as we rely on iced coffee.
8. “Where’s my laptop charger?” @ every journalism student
9. A great morning is reading the news and eating a donut
10. Your email inbox is never empty…
11. But you love getting emails so it’s fine!
12. Sleep? What’s that? The newsroom is never not busy. Something is always happening.
13. Have to write a 15-page paper? No problem - we do that in our sleep
14. Journo students know how to interview (and how to be interviewed).
15. “Do you mind if I record this interview?”
16. We get to meet and interview interesting people everyday.
17. “Sorry Mom, I can’t talk right now! I’m late!”
Each day is different as a journalism student; it is always an adventure.
