After hearing many adults in my life discuss, complain about and come home from "the office", I'm finally experiencing this air-conditioned, complete-with-spinny-desk-chair life...at least for this summer. I solemnly swear I take my job super seriously, but this listicle just had to poke fun at the quirks and complications of working in this unique environment of paperwork, pens and polished people.
1. All your co-workers will know your name before you do.
2. You feel the need to dress more business casual because you’re lacking grey hair.
3. But then when people saw you look “adorable” in your businesswear, you question all sartorial choices for the rest of the summer.
4. Not knowing exactly where the bathroom is for the first three days but you don’t want to be awkward and ask anybody.
5. Not knowing if you should be packing a more adulty lunch than a sandwich and juice.
6. When your boss checks on you and you’re eating your non-adulty lunch.
7. When your co-worker’s stories make no sense because you can’t tell if Boris is their grandson or their cat.
8. You feel uncomfortable calling Real AdultsTM by their first name, but you persevere.
9. You feel a sense of accomplishment when you do something remotely techy without technical difficulties or an awkward call to IT.
10. Everyone praises you for simply doing your job so you confusedly enjoy the praise.
11. You get nervous when an unknown human walks through the door and everybody knows them except you. Another boss or simply a deliveryperson?
12. You hope you’re living up to your job description.
13. And mildly freak out when you find out that there are hidden duties. Organizing a shared desk? Better get on that!
14. Being compared to other temps or last year’s intern and you're not sure if that's a good of bad thing...
15. Laughing awkwardly or launching into a convoluted discussion of your college’s distribution requirements when you can’t make conversation. (This one might be just me lol!)
16. Enjoying this summer immersion into adulting somewhat full-time.
17. Loving the Real Work ExperienceTM .
