When recruitment came around my freshman year, I was stricken with nerves. There were so many sororities with so many different reputations stereotypes. However, as the recruitment process started, it was love at first sight. I went home to Kappa Alpha Theta, or casually known as just Theta.
The Theta sisterhood is one of the strongest things I have ever been able to experience. While I love every aspect about this organization and sisterhood, I cannot, alone, lay my finger on just one reason why I love Kappa Alpha Theta.
I asked several Theta sisters from around the nation, "Why are you a Kappa Alpha Theta?" The responses I received from my fellow sisters quickly made me realize the reason why I am a Kappa Alpha Theta woman.
1. "I'm a Theta because even when I tell bad jokes or have stains all over my shirt, my sisters still love me just the same." - Ann Blessman, Butler University-Gamma Chapter
2. "Not only was I connected to the Thetas at my chapter, I formed an even stronger bond with my aunt and grandmother, who are my sisters now too! Its like having two more bigs " - Hannah Glass, University of Mississippi-Epsilon Zeta Chapter
3. "One of our highest aspirations as Thetas is Commitment to Service. After joining, volunteering quickly becomes an important part of each of our lives and it was Theta that inspired me to take this commitment across international borders. " - Lauren Metzel, University of Texas at Dallas-Zeta Upsilon Chapter
4. " My favorite part about our chapter is that it's very possible to take on a leadership position if you want one. The concept of 'leading women' isn't just some cutesy tag line or promotional tool. I feel so lucky to be in a chapter will my voice can be heard and my talents can be used. " - Renee Schuldt, University of Mississippi-Epsilon Zeta Chapter
5. "I am a Theta because I believe in my sorority. Kappa Alpha Theta is different from many sororities in that it truly values differences among women. Those differences make such a positive influence on each chapter of KAΘ because each girl isn't a "cookie-cutter" replica of one another--we are all so individually, unique. Each Theta I have met, even outside of my chapter, I share a special bond with. Genuine, and fun girls who value friendship, and hold scholarship as their highest aim. Theta's nationwide all have the same standard that of faith, hope, and love. You do not have to look exactly like your sister and interested in the same activities outside of your sorority to be an upstanding member of your chapter. As I first became a member of Theta I was so confused to be in a sorority of women who were so "different" from one another. As I began to grow into my situation I realized that I was so lucky to be apart of an organization where everyone is so accepting of you--no matter what. That is what sisterhood is and this is what Theta means to me." - Brittany Workland, University of Idaho-Beta Theta
6."I'm a Theta because even halfway around the world, I feel the love and support from all my sisters. I know I'm never alone and I love being a part of something greater than myself ." - Kelsey LeMon, University of Mississippi-Epsilon Zeta
7. "Theta, for me, felt like home the first time I set foot in the house during Rush week. No other house even compared to Theta. I have never looked back. All of my new found sisters are not only my sisters, but they are all my best friends. Theta has introduced me to a bond I never could have even imagined of having with so many girls, and I am so thankful for every single moment and experience I'm getting as a Theta. Being a Theta isn't just a sisterhood for 4 years, Theta is for life!" - Mackenzie Miron, University of Arizona-Beta Delta
8. "Joining Theta and gaining my sisters and the friendships from the sisterhood was the first time I didn't feel completely alone on campus." - Christine Sim, University of Mississippi-Epsilon Zeta
9. "I am a theta because of how devoted every one of my sisters is. Whether it is dedicated to being the best leader she can be, or working hard on helping in the whole Panhellenic community, every sister strives to be the best she can be." - Katie Patterson, University of North Florida-Eta Omicron
10."During recruitment Theta caught my eye, but on bid day it stole my heart. Words cannot describe the joy I had running down to 252 Rebel Drive with my eyes full of tears of joy and my heart full of Theta love. " - Rosalee Severino, University of Mississippi-Epsilon Zeta
11. "I am a Theta because Theta is my real American family but still supports my Swedish background (and accent)" - Madelen Johansson, University of Idaho-Beta Theta
12. “ I don’t see it as ‘I chose Theta’ I believe Theta chose me. Theta sees the greatness in every girl and brings it out of them. Since joining, I have become more involved in my school’s community, volunteer efforts, and I am able to meet amazing girls along the way, creating friendships that will last a lifetime.” – Brooke Gibson, University of Mississippi-Epsilon Zeta
13. "I'm a Theta because of the constant community whether I am 3 doors down from a sister or 500 miles away I always have someone to talk to. I'm a Theta because I'm not a "sorority girl"; I get to show people that we are not your typical college girls. We are strong. We are independent. We are vulnerable. We are Theta." - Sloan Strickland - Belmont University, Eta Phi Chapter
14. "I am a Kappa Alpha Theta because it gave me a home away from home. With this I gained friendships with people I will cherish forever. A home away from home meant a bond with people all across the U.S. that I would get the privilege to call my sisters." - Morgan Pirtle, University of Mississippi, Epsilon Zeta Chapter
15. "I love Theta because even though you meet fellow sisters from around the world as total strangers, you leave best friends and true sisters forever." - Celia Bressler - Wafford College, Zeta Eta Chapter
16. "I'm a Theta because CASA kept me alive as a child and now I'm giving back what I have been given. I love being a Theta because I always have someone to bring me to radiation, feed my cravings and hold my hair when I'm sick. My sisters have kept me healthy and sane, I wouldn't trade them for the world" -Aubry Leiva - University of Mississippi, Epsilon Zeta Chapter
Writing this article has been one of the greatest experiences as a Theta I have ever experienced. The overwhelming sense of sisterhood and pride that felt when interviewing each girl was tremendous. Being able to connect with the sisters from all over the nation was incredible, knowing that we share the same common ideals of faith, hope, and love. I now have a stronger bond and love with Kappa Alpha Theta and the wonderful sisters who belong to the fraternity.
So,
17. "I am a Kappa Alpha Theta woman because I am inspired every day by the strong which links each sister together and every kind-hearted ideals that each sister upholds. It was Kappa Alpha Theta that made me realize I was no longer alone on an enormous, new campus. It was Theta's heart for CASA that showed I was a part of something so much bigger than just myself. It was Theta that taught me the true value of friendship and also gave me the best, most loyal friends I could have ever asked for. It was Kappa Alpha Theta that made me the leading woman that I am today. Theta has made all the difference and has been the biggest influence in my life." - Morgan Lawrence - University of Mississippi, Epsilon Zeta Chapter
Until next time ladies, TLAM.
