Travel Oregon

There is a wide spectrum of people who settled down in good ol’ Oregon; everything from cowboys to hipsters and everything in between.

1. The Cow(boys and girls)

Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls, cowmen, and cow women! Whether it is a trip to the grocery story or Christmas dinner these people know how to party, drink, and just have a good time. They prove that chivalry isn’t dead and neither are republicans (it is a joke, calm down).

2. The Hipster

I love hipsters. Who doesn’t really? The best thing to do in downtown Portland, OR is to sit on a bench with great coffee, great friends, and makeup hipster's life stories. “Oh I’m Joshua and I moved to Portland because I love Portlandia”. If I had a dollar for every time I heard that I’d be able to buy Fred Armisen a real pair of Ray-Bans.

3. The “Wants To Live In A Big City But Is Stuck Here” (Not to mention Stuck-Up)

These people are the most frequently encountered one’s in small towns all over the 541. They believe they are destined for more than their small community has to offer. I find it heartbreaking because why they are too busy thinking about their future they seem to miss out on the present. Your community may be small, but the impact you can have on it is big.

4. The Mountain People

Mountain people are the best people from Oregon, in my opinion. They spend their days in their custom log cabins and their flannels. Often they hunt and fish and enjoy the scenic trails. Mountain people appreciate the beauty that Oregon has to offer. While they can come off as isolated and entitled, Mountain People work hard for everything they have.

5. The Athlete

Oregon athletes are nothing to joke about. Dedicated, hard working, strong people who put everything into the sport they are passionate about. Oregon has a lot of offer in this department as well; football, dance, golf, basketball, tennis, track--you name it and there is a person in Oregon who is passionately working toward a goal in that sport.

6. The Emo

A friend of mine was telling me about how there are no emo people in New Mexico so when she moved and started seeing them on the street it was almost like seeing a celebrity. “Hey! Look! It’s an emo!”

7. The Punk

Punks are a classic look that I don’t think will ever go out of style. Punks are a lot similar to the Scorpio people you have met. They are cold and seem uninterested in everything, but on the inside, they care endlessly. They’re like your favorite food, crunchy on the outside, soft and gooey on the inside.

8. The Classiest Person You’ll Ever Meet

While there are hella farm people in Oregon, there are also classy, well-mannered people. These people are so kind and will pull over to help you on the freeway and walk out in beautiful clothes that make you wish you were dead.

9. The Old Soul

There are people who wear classic rock band t-shirts who have never listened to Led Zeppelin before, but there are also people who love these bands and love the old school way of living. They are cool, calm, and collected. Old souls are confident in themselves, which is refreshing to meet.

10.The Bohemian Princess

We all know that girl from high school who dressed like it was the 70’s. Bohemian princesses are bringing back all the styles from our parents’ childhoods. They like fashion and fun so talk to one, you won’t regret it!

11. The Adult Child

Have you ever met an adult that acts like they are in high school? These people are an enigma. They look like an adult, they have responsibilities, but their mentality is stuck in high school. Please tell these people to grow up.

12. The Angry It’s Raining Guy

You live in Oregon, it is probably raining. Bye.

13. The Artist

Among the many talents, Oregonians have to offer, lies artists. These people are so creative, fun, and caring I have ever met. They take their talent seriously and don’t waste time. I love meeting artists from Oregon because they are so passionate about their work. It makes me appreciate art even more.

14. The Tomboy

Girls from Oregon are the best. Tomboy’s kill the game in OR. They’re down for anything and their style is fire. I usually want to steal their shoes and be their best friend. Go down to Oregon and find yourself a tomboy BFF.

15. The Boring

There are boring people all around the world, Oregon is no different. These people don’t tell you anything personal, they never want to go out, they’re usually basic. I apologize if the only people you have met from Oregon are boring.

16. The Oregon Classic

There is a sense of pride Oregonians have about where we are from. We like our mountains, our rivers, our cities. We take college sports, art, and music seriously. We are Oregon made and Oregon proud. Even if we leave the beaver state it holds a special place in our hearts forever.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
