My name isn't average or ordinary. When I was born, my parents made the decision to give me a pretty unusual name. Because of this, I face a number of experiences that only people with unique names can really understand. Here are a few of them.
1. You can list the top three ways that people butcher your name.
Mine are "Alyssa", "Alisha" and "Alicia."
2. You also know which of these butchering choices is the most popular and whenever you hear it in public, you automatically turn.
And then you feel really sad because it's not even your name.
3. When someone has called you the same wrong name three or four times, you face the inward struggle of deciding if you should actually correct them, or just go with it.
4. Whenever a stranger manages to pronounce your name correctly, you are filled with joy.
5. On the other hand, when an acquaintance mispronounces your name after knowing you for a while, you want to disown them as a friend.
6. There's always the one professor who still doesn't know how to say your name, even after you've corrected them over and over again.
7. You have a few creative ways of telling someone how to pronounce your name.
"It's the name 'Lisa', with an 'uh' in front of it." "It's like 'Mona Lisa,' minus the 'mon.'"
8. It gets really awkward when someone mispronounces your name then you correct them and they apologize profusely, and then they get it wrong again. You're usually just like,
9. Starbucks cups are really just a joke.
10. So, you invented a fake name to use whenever you go to restaurants.
Sometimes, you forget that you used your fake name and the people at the restaurant have to yell for a while until you pick up your food.
11. Going to gift shops makes you a little sad, because they never put your name on any of those personalized souvenirs.
Even though you know you'll never find it, you still look for your name anyway.
12. You feel a special connection with other people who have complicated names.
13. When you happen to mispronounce someone's name by accident, you feel great sorrow and you're like,
14. But all the same, you love your name a lot.
15. You especially love being the only person with your name in all of your social circles.
17. And when friends call you by name and say it correctly, it makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside.
It's a mark of true friendship when they get your unusual name right.
