Summer is an amazing thing. A time for bucket lists, travel, internships and sleeping in. Summer is also a time for Netflix. Sure, through out the school year we do our fair share of Netflix procrastinating. However, we don't really have to opportunity to make a blanket fort, bring snacks and binge watch for 24+ hours (the true definition of binge watching).
Here's 16 shows you should catch this summer.
*Note: I really could have gone on forever, but for the sake of time, I kept it down to 16
1. How I Met Your Mother
While I'm sure everyone has seen at least a few episodes of this fan favorite, only a few binge this show. However, it is certainly binge-worthy. It is consistently funny, has lovable characters, enough plot development, and finally (and perhaps most importantly) went on for several seasons, so you feel like you grow with the characters. Also, it's fun to be the person who has seen every episode, even the obscure ones like that time Ted dated Katy Perry.
You'll love this if you like: "Big Bang Theory"
2. Gilmore Girls
While a lot of girls I know have watched (and loved) this show, I think it needs to be on here because it has universal appeal. It is funny and witty with an impeccable script, which almost entirely consists of quotes that could have come out of the mouth of a college student going through finals. Binging this is particularly timely with Netflix doing a sequel miniseries soon.
You'll love this if you like: "Friends"
3. The Great British Baking Show
Whoever said the British can't make good food hasn't seen this show. This show is also perfect for people who have watched Food Network for years but have grown tired of the same shows over and over again. Rather than impressive, highly trained, model-esque contestants, TGBBS features the average joe, who's only experience was gained in baking for their husbands, wives, children and grandchildren. The quirky British humor and quaint small-town speed is very appealing, as are the personalities of the contestants which might be seen as "not marketable enough" by American standards but better reflect real people.
You'll love this if you like: "Cutthroat Kitchen"
4. Continuum
This one goes out to the Sci-Fi fans who feel like they've seen it all. It features police officer Kiera Cameron or "protector" from the year 2077 who, while trying to take down a terrorist group known as Liber8, gets sent back to the year 2012 and trapped in modern day Vancouver. The terrorist group begins to use their knowledge of future events to make a lot of money which funds their revolution. To stop them, Cameron pairs up with the local authorities. This action packed show follows Cameron as she takes them down as well as looking for away to get back to the husband and son she left in the future.
You'll love this if you like: "The 100" or "Nikita"
5. Parks and Recreation
If you haven't already caught on to this hilarious show you're a little late to the game, but it's never too late to join. Bright side is, you don't have to agonize as you wait to find out if the show will be renewed. So good! Join a rag tag team of workers in the, you guessed it, Parks and Recreation department of Pawnee, Indiana, lead by the tenacious Leslie Knope. It stars Amy Poehler, Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt, Aziz Ansari, Rashida Jones, Adam Scott and Rob Lowe. 'Nuff said.
You'll love this if you like: "30 Rock" or "The Office"
6. Merlin
While everyone is familiar with the great adventures of Merlin, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, BBC took a fresh look on an old favorite by depicting the two heroes early days back when they had only just met and Arthur was still a prince. This coming-of-age story is well done and filmed in beautiful France, Wales and Kent. It has plenty of humor and gorgeous costume design.
You'll love this if you like: "Doctor Who" or "Reign"
7. Daredevil
With season two fresh on Netflix, now is a great time to start being a fan. It is Marvel, but that doesn't mean it's for everyone. It is much darker than comparable super hero shows on television right now such as "Arrow" or "The Flash." However, overall, the show's script and production quality is amazing. Daredevil is also an important part of the Marvel universe so if you don't read comics, you might want to watch to fill in any blanks.
You'll love this if you like: "Gotham" or "Jessica Jones"
8. Bob's Burgers
On the flip side (pun intended) "Bob's Burgers" is a great show for some comic relief. This is perfect if you've already finished other animated shows and are looking for something new. It's also perfect if you're looking for something quick as the average episode is a mere 20 minutes long.
You'll love this if you like: "Family Guy," "American Dad" or "Futurama"
9. Scrubs
If you want some hilarious comedy and characters you'll quickly fall in love with, this is the show for you! J.D. is an attending doctor at Sacred Heart Teaching Hospital. We follow him and his friends as they practice mischief and medicine. You can't go wrong here.
You'll love this if you like: "Psych" or ""Grey's Anatomy"
10. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
If you didn't grow up with this show, you should have. That aside, it's a great show! It takes a traditional theory on vampires (burn in the sunlight, stake to the heart, etc.) which is refreshing in this day and time. Also, it is packed with 90's nostalgia from clothing and tech to slang. Bonus points for following characters from high school into college –– and for featuring strong women!
You'll love this if you like: "Supernatural" or "Charmed"
11. One Tree Hill
This is another show (like Buffy) that about 1/2 the population grew up on the other 1/2 has forgotten existed. Lucky for us, Netflix exists. It stars Chad Michael Murray, Bethany Joy Lenz and Sophia Bush (amongst other great actors and actresses) and follows them as they make it through high school and adulthood.
You'll love this if you like: "Gossip Girl" or "90210"
12. Chopped
This show is great! While you may have seen an episode or two in the middle of the afternoon when there was nothing better on, this show is actually worth the time. The can't-miss episodes are their specialty ones including celebrity or children cook offs. Plus, it's always fun to watch people attempt to cook with ingredients they've never even heard of.
You'll love this if you like: "Iron Chef America"
13. Bill Nye The Science Guy
I don't know about you, but the last time I was in a science class was junior year in high school. I certainly need a refresher before taking my G.E. lab science next year. What better way to do that than shout "Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill!" and have flashbacks to middle school? The world gave a collective cheer when Netflix added the show earlier this school year and now it's time to bunker down because "science rules"!
You'll love this if you like: "Reading Rainbow" or "The Magic School Bus"
14. EUReKA
When ex-U.S. Marshall Jack Carter and his daughter moved to small town Eureka so he could be the new sheriff, he didn't know it would be a top-secret town full of America's leading experts, geniuses and their families. Carter finds himself dealing with a chaos unlike any other he's encountered before, including alien abductions and technology with a mind of it's own. This is show is underrated and widely unknown. In fact the main actor is the face of Maytag now, though I've heard he's been a familiar face on Haven and Cedar Cove. Anyway, it's witty and fun with a pretty unique plot. Some other shows have tried to follow EUReKA's footsteps since, but none have quite done it like the original.
You'll love this if you like: "Haven" or "Bones"
15. Kitchen Nightmares
This sounds kind of bad when I put a guilty pleasure into words and then type them up for the world to see, but watching Gordon Ramsay yelling at people is so entertaining. If you're a fan of Hell's Kitchen you know how creative and humorous his insults and comebacks can be. At the end of they day though, his advice is helpful and I think, TV aside, he really wants these businesses to succeed.
You'll love this if you like: "Hell's Kitchen" or "Restaurant Impossible"
16. Broadchurch
This British show has beautiful cinematography and was shot is a series of seaside towns on the coast of England. It centers around a detective trying to solve the murder of a young boy and redeem his reputation. Bonus points: it stars David Tennant –– AKA the 10th Doctor.
You'll love this if you like: "Happy Valley" or "Hinterland"
Honorable Mentions:
The Walking Dead
Once Upon A Time
Lost
Pretty Little Liars
Above all, have a happy last few weeks of school, survive finals and H.A.G.S. (have a great summer).
