As a theatre nerd, along with many people across the world, I have become obsessed with the Broadway musical Hamiliton by Lin-Manuel Miranda. And my friends are well aware of how much I love this show. Everyone that I talk to has a different reaction to hearing or seeing something about Hamilton. Whether it is a post someone sees on Facebook, or hears me jamming to the soundtrack.
The not a fan reactions:
1. "You haven't seen it, so why do you like it so much.
2. "I don't get the hype."
Yeah neither did I at first, but then I listened to the soundtrack.
3. "Who cares?/What even is that?"
Sorry, but we can't be friends now.
4. "Why is it so popular?"
Have you listened to the music?
5. "Okay, we get it, can you just stop talking about it already?"
I WILL NOT BE SILENCED!
6. "You are never going to be able to afford tickets, so why even bother liking it?"
Because I want to and a girl can dream, can't she? *cue "My Shot" please*
7. "I've listened to part it, but I don't like why it's mostly songs, like what about dialogue?"
That's the best part and there's spoken dialogue within the songs, my friend!
8. "No, we are not listening to this!" or "Turn it off already!"
AGAIN, I WILL NOT BE SILENCED! *begins rapping Guns and Ships*
The just-as obsessed reactions:
1. "Which Schuyler sister do you think you are?"
Peggy. I'm positive that I am Peggy.
2. "Can we listen to it?"
Of course we can, Would you like mixtape of Original Broadway Cast Album?
3. "Wish I could afford tickets."
Same here. Again, a girl can dream. Maybe one day I'll win the ticket lottery.
4. "Lin-Manuel Miranda is a musical genius."
Agreed. Who else would think of writing a hip-hop musical about a founding father after reading his biography?
5. "Did you hear (insert actor's name) is going to be (insert character) in New York/Chicago?"
Wayne Brady as Aaron Burr? Of course, and that makes me wish for tickets even more.
6. "Have you managed to be able to sing Guns and Ships? It's so fast!"
No, but I am trying too. But I always manage to nail, "Give it up for America's Favorite Fighting Frenchman!" Or would you like to join in a redition of "Alexander Hamiliton?"
7. "Is this the mixtape or the Original Broadway Cast Album?"
Does it really matter because they are both amazing?
8. "YES! SOMEONE ELSE WHO LOVES THIS AS MUCH AS I DO!"
Where have you been all my life?
So yes, there are mixed reactions to me and Hamilton. But no matter how many times I here a negative response, I will continue to love this show and will still dream of one day getting to see it live. Until then, I will continue to have the soundtrack on repeat and continue to try sing along to every song. Which is totally not how I spent winter break this year. If you are like me and can relate to these reactions, and still long to see the show on Broadway, do not throw a your shot!
