The hotly-anticipated new revival of Jerry Herman's "Hello Dolly," which will open in April of next year with Bette Midler and David Hyde Pierce starring, just announced more leading members of its cast, one of whom is two-time Tony nominee and Olivier award-winner Gavin Creel. Gavin is my favorite male Broadway performer, so this made me very excited. Gavin has lead an interesting career; with every musical he's in, he's in the spotlight, but seems never to get the kind of recognition that his cast mates, or the other actors in musicals that season get. For example, in 2009, he was nominated for a Tony for his career-defining role as Claude in the Tony-winning revival of "Hair," and lost to the three young boys sharing the role of Billy in "Billy Elliot." In this year's revival of Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick's "She Loves Me," Gavin was the only one of the four main actors in the musical to not be nominated for a Tony, or for any other major award this season. I was fortunate enough to see “She Loves Me” in May, and though I might be biased, I think he deserved a Tony nomination! Even though his incredible voice and subtle acting have been gracing the Broadway stage for more than a decade, he had to go to London to get truly recognized; in 2014, he won a prestigious Olivier Award for his performance in "The Book of Mormon" in the West End. So, to do my part to make him a bit more well-known, I've compiled a list of 11 videos that will make you love him. Guaranteed.
1. "I Believe" from "The Book of Mormon" at the 2014 Olivier Awards
Gavin recreated a part of the performance that won him the Olivier at the awards ceremony, as Elder Price in “The Book of Mormon". While you're watching this, bear in mind that earlier that day, Gavin badly injured his knee and wasn't sure he'd be able to perform! Talk about being a trooper! They say, "The show must go on...”
2. "As If We Never Said Goodbye" from "Sunset Boulevard" at MCC's Miscast
MCC's Miscast, the event where Broadway actors sing songs from musical roles they’d never normally get to play for real, is always a great event. This year, Gavin performed two numbers, and both were highlights of the evening. Here he is as the faded diva, Norma Desmond from Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Sunset Boulevard." Sounds fa-bulous, right? It is.
3. Side By Side With Susan Blackwell
Here's Gavin being adorable while talking to Susan Blackwell, Broadway interviewer extraordinaire. Also in this episode are Kelli O'Hara and Beth Leavel, two of my other faves.
4. "Do You Remember?" by Pasek and Paul
This song shows off Gavin's amazing falsetto perfectly. Chills. Just chills.
5. "I Got Life" from "Hair"
The 2009 revival of "Hair" was an important show for Gavin. Many have said he gave the performance of his life in the show, and it also was around this time he came out as a gay man. During the musical's run, Gavin became a passionate advocate for equality, and founded an organization called "Broadway Impact," which works to fight for LGBTQIA+ rights. Here he is with the cast, performing the heck out of "I Got Life.”
6. Gavin speaking at an Equality Rally
Gavin's passion for justice is just one of the reasons he inspires me. This passion is on full display in this video.
7. "I Turned A Corner" from "Thoroughly Modern Millie"
Gavin made his Broadway debut alongside fellow Broadway first-timer Sutton Foster, who is now a six-time Tony nominee and two-time winner. They were both fresh faces, and both made their mark on the business in this hit musical, holding their own beside stage veterans Marc Kudisch, Harriet Harris, and Sheryl Lee Ralph. Aren’t they the cutest?
8. "Marriage Medley" at Lincoln Center's American Songbook Series
In 2012, Gavin was invited to be a featured guest in Lincoln Center’s American Songbook Series. His concert was a mix of standards, Broadway show tunes, and more recent pop hits. At the end of the evening, he performed what he called the “Marriage Medley”, which was a mashup of three Broadway songs from "Wicked," “Pippin” and "Hair," all dealing with the subject of love. It’s one of my favorite performances of his. Here’s a snippet of it.
9. "Ode To Billie Joe"
Gavin’s partnership with Broadway pianist, teacher and writer Seth Rudetsky is a match made in heaven. They regularly do concerts together, and Seth chose this song for Gavin to sing. Here they are performing it together on Seth’s radio show, “Seth Speaks.”
10. Seth Rudetsky Deconstructs a Song from "Thoroughly Modern Millie"
Here’s another video with Seth Rudetsky, where he explains just what makes Gavin’s voice so spectacular.
11. "Ilona" from "She Loves Me"
Gavin’s performance as the womanizing, self-centered Steven Kodaly in “She Loves Me” was a bit of a departure from the sweet, earnest, or tortured characters he’s played in the past, and he did it with malicious flair. Here he is with co-star Jane Krakowski — holy splits, Batman! — on the Today Show.
12. "Going Down" from "Hair"
Yes, there is a chance I’m putting this video on here purely for, um, aesthetic reasons…But Gavin also sings the heck out of this song, so it’s a win-win.
13. "I've Been" from "Next to Normal"
This performance of an early version of a song from the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Next to Normal” makes me want to see Gavin play Dan Goodman 10 or 15 years from now. Preferably with Kelli O'Hara as his wife, Diana. Make it happen, theatre gods.
14. "Noise" by Gavin Creel and Robbie Roth
Gavin is also a terrific songwriter (save some talents for the rest of us!), and this anthem about equality is one of the reasons I got interested in activism in the first place.
15. "Take Me or Leave Me" from "Rent"
To cap off this list, here’s my absolute favorite Gavin performance. He and mega Broadway star Aaron Tveit, who's on CBS' "BrainDead" right now, played Maureen and Joanne, the lesbian couple from "Rent," and it was the best thing ever. Whoever thought of putting them together for this song is a genius.
