15 Truths of Having a Sister

In This Article:

Having siblings in general is the biggest blessing I could have ever received in my life. I love both my brother and sister, and being the oldest child in my family is something I'm incredibly proud to be. Still, there's something really special about having a sister. I'm two years older than mine, and it just so happens to be her 17th birthday today, so I'm making this post in her honor. I can't imagine my childhood without her, and our relationship really means everything to me. So here's fifteen things only people with sisters can really understand.

1. Fights never really last that long

My sister and I fought a lot as children and even into teenage years. There were (and still are) many times where I had the overwhelming desire to knock the living day lights out of her. Yet, it would only take an hour or two for us to go right back to laughing and one of us asking the other if they wanted to go get coffee. No matter how ugly or how brutal the fight is, we always make amends.

2. She's seen every side of you

My sister has seen me at my weirdest, angriest, saddest, happiest, and everything in between. I can't say that for most people in my life, and it's kinda great. She knows me in and out, and she truly is my rock.

3. Life is never boring

This especially applies to my sister because she's probably the CRAZIEST human being on the face of this planet. She's got more energy than anyone I know, and she never fails to make me laugh. I can always count on her to cheer me up with her fun-loving spirit.

4. You're totally honest with each other

I can always ask my sister about an outfit or a situation, and I can depend on the fact that she'll tell me the truth. Most people would tell you a little white lie, but that's not the case with a sister. She's totally forward with me and is an open book.

5. You have a constant friend.

As we've grown, I've really learned to appreciate having a sister in my life, especially one so close in age. Now that I'm in college, I cherish any time I get to spend with her and hear about her life more than I did before. I love our spontaneous poke loa and coffee runs, mall trips, movie nights, etc.

6. You share everything

I like to joke that my favorite place to shop is Amelia's Closet, but it's honestly not a joke. My sister has an awesome sense of style, and I take her clothes all the time (even though she gets mad at me sometimes). It also goes way beyond that. We share a car, we share a room, we share a bathroom. It's all a collective space.

7. You have endless inside jokes

I don't think I even have to explain this one. My sister and I will laugh until we're literally wheezing with tears in our eyes over some of the dumbest things, but that's the best part of it.

8. Some of your best memories are with her

My sister and I really are partners in crime. From family trips to playing sports together to watching each other succeed, there's so many things we've experienced together. It's such a blessing to grow up with someone who shares that joy.

9. She always has your back

I can yell about my sister to you and tell her how much she pisses you off, but the minute you insult her it's game over. I'm the only one who gets to say that. Whether it's covering for her from my parents or offering to fight someone who upset her, I would protect my sister from anyone or anything, and I know she would do the same for me.

10. She is your biggest fan

I can be pretty insecure at times, but I can always rely on my sister to hype me up and encourage me. She always reminds me that I'm awesome and that any person who didn't see it that way didn't deserve my energy. She's my best cheerleader and most enthusiastic supporter in all things.

11. Your conversations are the best

I've shared a room with my sister since I was 2, and I wouldn't want it any other way. Nothing can replace our late night talks in our beds or sitting on the floor and ranting about our parents or just watching movies.

12. How much you are alike but also different.

Aside from our striking physical similarities, we're both a lot like our mom in mannerisms. Still, my sister's personality is really complimentary to mine. Our differences really do make our relationship better. She always pushes me to be my best, and I do the same for her.

13. You can't wait till she has kids

Nothing excites me more than the idea of having a niece or nephew, and I honestly can't wait till I get to love my sister's children. It fills my heart with joy to think about the place I will have in their life and just how much I get to love them.

14. You miss her when she's away

I try not to think about it too much, but I really do miss her. There are days when I get sad thinking about how much she's grown and the parts of her life that I can't really be there to see now. I wish I could be there to celebrate all of her achievements and joy, but I know that she'll always be a part of my life, regardless of where she is.

15. She's your favorite part of life

Amelia, I'm so inexplicably blessed to be your sister. You're my best friend, my favorite person, and the best thing that ever happened to me. I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you by my side and knowing that you're always there in every season of life. I love you with my whole heart and soul.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
