College is a more than lovely experience. It is even better getting the full experience at a four year school rather than having to commute, dread, and repeat high school at a community college. I learned a lot throughout those two years that, in my own personal way, I would like to advise incoming peers about. Upon entering community school there are some things that I wish I knew, and these are just a short few.
You feel like you’re backtracking and not taking any steps forward in your life.
2) It truly feels like Community College High while being surrounded by so many familiar faces.
No doubt, you’re bound to see at least one to five high school 'friends’ in passing that you weren’t necessarily planning on seeing.
3) The advisors probably could care less about you, and you will basically feel as though you are your own advisor and mentor through it all.
Not ALL advisors are like this at community college but, being that it is not as strict as a four year school, the advising staff isn’t always up to par.
4) While all of your friends are at their schools having a great time, you may or may not be in your bed watching Netflix and eating that same old town classic pizza.
Unless your few friends at home decide to have weekday parties, you’re probably going to be stuck either at your boring job that you’ve had since you were 15, or you will be curled up in bed.
5) If you don’t join clubs, or get involved, it will make the entire experience ten times more miserable.
Since you’re not living there, it is definitely harder to make friends, therefore, joining clubs is essential for friendship and a little bit of fun.
6) When it is time to leave for a 4 year school, your mom is even more emotional than she would’ve been two years prior due to the fact that she got two extra years with you.
If your mom is anything like mine, she probably feels happy to have you home for another two years and when it finally is time to move away, she will most likely not be very composed.
7) STAY ON TOP OF YOUR ADVISORS REGARDING TRANSCRIPTS/ ANY FORM OF IMPORTANT DOCUMENTATION, OTHERWISE THEY MAY NOT SEND IT.
If you’re not on top of your advisors regarding transcripts, they may not get sent to your future school. Therefore, you physically won’t be able to move up to the next college level.
8) The classes are far easier than most four year classes, and almost barely prepare you for it.
At four year colleges, one class may sometimes consist of the same amount of work given by two different classes at community schools. Three credits and four credits are two completely different things, although it may not seem like a lot.
9) You’re doing double the work because you’re stuck in 5-6 classes while your other friends are only taking 4 for the same amount of credits.
Although one class’s work doesn’t compare to that of a four year school, in order to complete the proper amount of credits, you need to take almost double the classes to do so.
10) Your life feels entirely too boring to be in college.
College is supposed to be fun right? Well, guess again while going to community college. There is nothing that begins with f and ends with u-n about it. You go to class, come home, do your work, sometimes go to work, and sometimes hangout with friends if they’re not doing the same.
11) I know that I’m saying a lot of horrible things but, truly, I saved a lot of money.
Okay, so, it wasn’t the best two years of my life, but, I saved so much money and am in almost no debt because of it.
12) My grades were ten times better than high school, which helped me get into a college of my choice.
In my community college I was motivated to try a lot harder because I knew that if I didn’t try hard, I wouldn’t be able to get out of community college.
13) Although it’s annoying seeing people from high school, it wasn’t so bad getting some extra time with the friends that did stay home.
Friends from home that stay home from school are always nice to be able to spend a little bit extra time with, even if they’re not your closest friends.
14) Visiting people is so exciting, and you get to go to more than one college any weekend you want.
It’s always a blast visiting all of your best friends at their new schools with their new lives and new friends. What’s even better is that you get to explore different places every single weekend.
15) Two years go by insanely fast, so just try and make friends and enjoy every second of it!
It’s really not all that bad, but nothing is better than going away to school. Enjoy your time home with your family and use that time to make yourself the best you that you can be.
