It happens every year; sometime during Thanksgiving dinner your grandma or your energetic aunt exclaims "let's all go around the table and say what we're thankful for!" You roll your eyes. You listen to every person at the table say, around their mouthful of mashed potatoes, family, health, friends. Then there's that one person who says "this food!" or "indoor plumbing!" Here is a compilation of things to be thankful for that look outside the box, that can spice up that routine conversation.
1. Sweaters
They keep you so warm and cozy, you look great no matter what. You're probably wearing one at Thanksgiving dinner right now.
2. Your new lipstick
You know you look good with this baby. The perfect shade and it has something in it to make your lips soft? A steal. Grateful doesn't even scratch the surface.
3. This book you just finished reading, [insert book title here]
Not only is this fun because you get to talk about a great book, but it starts conversations about books in general! Whip this option out especially if you're last in the circle around the table; you can avoid any awkward silences what may follow the sharing time.
4. Your favorite band
They make you dance, they make you feel good. Remember when you saw them in concert that one time? That was great, wasn't it. You love them.
5. Pajamas
They're cozy, soft and make you feel fabulous. What's not to be thankful for?
6. Hot chocolate/ coffee/ tea
It's like a friend, basically. So, when your uncle says he's thankful for friends and family, you can say hey me too! My best friend is Earl Gray.
7. Your favorite movie, [insert title here]
Just like your favorite band, your favorite movie is there for you through anything. An instant cheer up, always in the mood to put it on, a great movie can do anything. This can also be used as a conversation starter, so think about saving it until the very end.
8. Good socks
Are they fuzzy? Are they knee socks? Any way you like them, they keep your feet warm and probably look great.
9. Hot showers
Just cool enough where your skin doesn't melt off, the perfect temperature can make any day better.
10. Fast internet
Don't pretend like you don't thank the universe when your connection finally makes it through in that cafe.
11. Dogie kisses
My dog will always love me, even after I have onions.
12. Fresh laundry
It's not just that the clothes are warm and clean, but they smell good. And (!) it means you don't have to do laundry again for at least another week.
13. Good-butt jeans
Hell yeah. You look great. You feel great. Your confidence goes through the roof when you put these things in. They're fantastic.
14. Just-right hugs
There is absolutely nothing like getting a hug that's not too tight and not too noncommittal. You feel safe, loved and absolutely right with the world.
15. ANYTHING you enjoy
My mindset on Thanksgiving is pretty simple: it's a time to get together, enjoy being with family, and eat great food. Most of the basic things to be thankful for are taken for granted, yes, but they are also not unique and can get dull. Why not go for a more shallow answer every so often? Bring up the little things that you love and it will spark up more conversation!
Happy Thanksgiving!
