We all can't forget about the four years we spent in high school. My high school, in particular, is Pomperaug High School located in Southbury, Ct where they have students from two neighboring towns, Southbury and Middlebury. All of us pretty much knew each other, knew all the teachers, and had little things that got us through the years. It is a high school that is almost impossible to forget about, good or bad. Other than college, high school was supposed to be fun, with a few torturous days. When I think of Pomperaug, I think of 15 things in particular that truly bring back the four years of high school.
1. Spirit Week
What would be high school without our beloved spirit week? It brought us right up to the one and only pep rally we held. My senior year, our days consisted of USA day, Hawaiian/Jungle day, Costume day, and class color day. As you get older, the more fun spirit week becomes.
2. Junior Ring Dance
This is where most of us received our class rings. But also, a time for us to dress up, find dates, and dance the night away. It was either unforgettable in a great or horrible way.
3. Mr. Pomperaug
The senior boys battled away in order to receive the title of “Mr. Pomperaug.” It was always full of laughter from the boys dancing, modeling, and even their so-called talents. They pranced around all throughout the school day wearing mini tight denim shorts and a white t-shirt with red sashes titling who they are in the event.
4. After School Rich’s Trip
With Rich Farm Ice Cream less than 10 minutes away from the school, our motivation for the school day was to an ice cream treat. It was well worth it, too. Their famous cookie monster ice cream flavor put into a waffle cone would satisfy a craving like no other.
5. Colored Lockers
We all can remember the color locker we all received in high school. Whether it was red, blue, orange, it was hard to forget. I mean, we did have the same locker for all four years.
6. Senior Trip to Six Flags
There was nothing truly better to end all four years at Six Flags, with the senior class. It was a day spent out in the sun, waiting in line for rides, pairing up with some of your favorite people, and genuinely enjoying the time left.
7. Hallway Patrol
Passports, security guards, and cameras. What else would hallway patrol be at Pomperaug High School? Every time we wanted to leave, we needed our passports signed by our teacher with a time and where you were going. And every so often, you would find a security guard following you making sure you were where you needed to be. We also knew the cameras were going to catch any mischievous behavior.
8. Resource Center
Personally, this made high school more sufficient. They placed most of the teachers in the resource center sectioned off with their department. After school, during lunch, and throughout the day, you could find the professors sitting at their assigned desk. They put every teacher in one place so the students didn’t have to look around, which made it easier.
9. Sport Events
Hello, Jungle. We became a fan base for Pomperaug High School appearing at football games, etc. Although we were not the best at sports, we were not afraid to show off our pride and spend time with friends at the games.
10. Mock Car Accident
This was an unforgettable experience. The mock car accident that occurred my freshmen year was an imitation of a post car accident outside. They had helicopters, police, firefighters, and ambulances coming from every which way. It was emotional in some ways, too.
11. Favorite Staff Members
Throughout the years at Pomp, we all found our favorite teachers from every department. Whether it was Mr. Barry, Mr. Calabro, Mrs. Brevetti, DeGregs, YoBoz, guidance counselors (special shout out to Mr. Blanchet), Mr. Kimble, Mr. Schumacher, and many others.
12. PLC Days
What high school student wouldn’t love being able to sleep in a little and come into school late?
13. Dr. Sippy
We all happened to appreciate our beloved Dr. Sippy, the Superintendent of Region 15, at the time. When he had retired, we were all affected in some way, but I think we can all say that we wanted him back at some point.
14. Cheesy Bagels
For $1.75, you were able to buy a bagel with cheese put in a microwave for it to be warm and melted. Sounds unappetizing, but it truly was delicious. The days they would run out were quite upsetting too.
15. Graduation
Even though Pomperaug gave us ugly graduation gowns, it was still quite unforgettable. We had our favorite teachers being ambassadors at our sides, too. Being in our gymnasium surrounded by our friends and loved ones watching us achieve the thing we had all been waiting for, for four years. We made it out. And sitting in that gym with all of you was quite fantastic, and heartwarming. I hope all of you are doing well in whatever you chose to invest your time in after Pomperaug High School.
