From the misspellings and mispronunciations to the nicknames given to you to “make it easier,” you’re probably used to these 15 things if you’ve grown up with a unique name.

1. Automatically spelling your name whenever someone asks for it.

You don’t even wait for them to try to spell or understand it – you just automatically make it easy (or easier) for them to know exactly what your name is.

2. Starbucks couldn’t spell it right even if they tried.

You’ve embraced a fake identity for every time you have to give your name to a barista or restaurant hostess. It makes things so much easier.

3. You still get birthday cards from your extended family with your name spelled wrong.

You know it’s rough when even your family can’t get it right.

4. The feeling when a stranger understands your name the first time you say it.

I love you.

5. Having a permanent catchphrase you tag onto your name whenever someone looks confused after you say it.

“You know, like [INSERT SOMETHING ~MOST PEOPLE~ KNOW].” The worst is that one person who doesn’t even understand your catchphrase.

6. “What does your name mean?”

It means: “I have weird parents who think it’s cool to give their kid a complicated name they have to explain every time they say it.”

7. “Share a Coke with...” NOT ME!

Remember when Coke came out with their Share a Coke campaign? While all your friends were posting pictures of their cans with their names on them, you were constantly reminded you’d never be able to do the same.

8. You never find your name on keychains in souvenir shops.

And yet you still look every. single. time.

9. Spell check always assumes you’re spelling your name wrong.

From texts to emails, to every single paper you’ve typed on Microsoft Office, no spell check thinks your name is legit. As annoying as that squiggly red line can be, it’s always entertaining to see what your name autocorrects to.

10. “Where are you from?"

A magical land called, “That’s A Rude Question!”

11. When your professor pauses on the attendance sheet, 10/10 times it’s because they don’t know how to pronounce your name.

And by the end of the semester, they still haven’t gotten it right once.

12. When people say your name so wrong you don’t even know they’re talking to you.

Usually around the third time of them saying a slaughtered version of your name, you realize they’re talking to you.

13. Even when people email you or write on your Facebook wall, they still spell your name wrong.

It’s written RIGHT THERE! It’s a mystery as to how people still manage to get it wrong.

14. People give you their own nicknames because “your name is just too complicated.”

At this point, you should automatically start calling them a new name, too.

15. Repeatedly asking your parents if you’re pronouncing your own name right.

You know your name is unique when you don’t even know how to say it correctly.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
