So, this is a list I wish I had known about before I came to college. Some of these things I learned on my own, some I learned from my mom and my older friends and family. Here's fifteen of these things that every college girl should take the time to read.
1. How to change a tire
Now granted, this is not something I know how to do. I just use my trusty AAA card and call it when needed. But girls really should know how to do this if they were ever in a situation where they can't reach AAA, or anyone really. It's a very helpful tool to know how to do.
2. How to dress for any occasion
Girls, this is a big one. Whether it's for a job interview or for a night out with your girls, you need to know how to dress. I live in leggings and t-shirts, but that's not what I would wear to a job interview - even if the job did not require a uniform. Always be professional and dress the part. You will look better, feel better, and things will tend to go your way.
3. Your bra size
I cannot stress this enough. Girls are supposed to get re-sized every six months, but my rule of thumb is once a year. If there is gaping anywhere, it's too big. If parts of your skin are bulging out, it's too small. A good way to tell is by sticking your hand in the back of your bra near the clasp. If you can fit at least two fingers in the band without any gaping, it fits. Any more or any less, you're wearing the wrong size.
4. How to ask for help
Now girls, I am guilty of this. I sometimes need help and do not know how to ask for it. Learn this. Learn that it is okay to ask for help. It's okay to not be sure what you need, but it's always best to ask.
5. How to get over an ex without completely falling apart
Yes, it's okay to cry and eat an entire carton of ice cream every once in a while. But after that's over, get over it. He was not worth crying over and you're not moving on by dwelling on it. Do something that makes you happy in place of focusing on what you lost. Spend time with friends and family. Allow your heart and mind to heal. One day, you will find the right person who makes you completely and utterly happy, and sometimes we have to get knocked down along the way. As Ted Mosby said, “Sometimes things have to fall apart to make way for better things".
6. It's okay to cry
This kind of goes along with number 5. It's always okay to cry. Don't ever feel like you can't. Sometimes it's a good thing. Embrace it.
7. Respect others by respecting yourself
This can sometimes be really hard. By respecting yourself, it's often easier to respect others. If you don't have any respect for yourself, sometimes you will let others take advantage of you. You are only as strong as you allow yourself to be.
8. Worry less, enjoy more
If we spend all of our time worrying, we miss out on so many things. I am definitely guilty of this. I worry about the littlest things, especially if it's something I can fix or could have prevented. It's not worth worrying about. Whatever is meant to be will be and we just have to embrace life as it is. Enjoy it while you have it before it slips away from you.
9. Your health and well being are both so important
Now, this is coming from a girl who get's a headache and think she has a brain tumor (thanks Grey's). If you ever feel sick or feel like something is wrong, go to the doctor. You never know when a little thing could turn out to be something serious. Don't take your health for granted.
10. Don't dwell on the past
We all have that one boy we liked back in high school or that one thing we wish we hadn't said. Don't focus on the past. Live in the present and look forward to the future. By focusing on what's around you in the moment and appreciating everything your life has to offer, you can often enjoy a lot more than by focusing on what's already happened.
11. Talk to your mom
Personally, I have a wonderful relationship with my mom. She is not only my mom, but a trusted friend and advice-giver. Don't take her love for granted. Yes, you may think the whole “when I was your age" speech isn't worth your time, but trust me, you'll come to appreciate it one day. Talk to her. She's been there. She'll understand.
13. God's timing is the best timing
A close friend of mine once told me, “It's His time, not yours." He could not have been more right. If you allow God to take control and guide you through life, you would be surprised what that does to you. Despite what you may think, things are not always in your control. But that's okay.
14. Take pictures whenever you can
There's a reason the saying “a picture is worth 1,000 words" exists. Pictures are some of the greatest things. Whenever you are out and want to remember it, take a picture. They are a great thing to look back on one day. I would know, my mom has dozens of photo albums of me. They are a great thing to have.
And finally…
15. Smile
People always tell me, “I love your smile." Believe it or not, a smile goes a long way. If you are walking on campus or down the street and you smile at someone you walk by, it can change their entire day. It's contagious. Don't be afraid to show off those pearly whites of yours. You'll feel better.
