15 Things I Didn't Realize I Missed Until I Went Home

It's the little things: your pets, high water pressure, and the kitchen sink.

15 Things I Didn't Realize I Missed Until I Went Home

There are so many little things I didn't realize I missed until I got back from college for the break weekend, sat back and thought "Wow, I missed this." Here are a few examples.

1. The food

You start to forget how much pepper you added to your dining hall meals after about ten shakes. Coming home to food and your favorite local shops is the absolute best! Also, being able to cook in your own kitchen instead of your dorm or kitchenette is wonderful.

2. Catching up with old friends

Being able to hear all the latest and greatest from your best friends from high school is always a blast. Catching up with friends that are still stuck in high school is always pretty interesting too, at least to see how that place has changed...or hasn't...

3. Not having to use public bathrooms

All I can say is, "Wow, I missed two-ply."

4. My own bed

Being able to sleep in a bed bigger than your twin size rock is the greatest thing since August. Also, being able to sleep in is amazing!

5. Seeing how your hometown has changed (or hasn't)

Target is still there, but a new roundabout was installed, and my favorite cafe got new menus. Crazy how much can change in just a few months.

6. Seeing your best friend's parents

Nothing beats going over to your high school best friend's house and being asked a ton of questions and getting to share all your 'crazy, fun college stories' with their cool, hip parents!

7. Seeing your pets again

Nothing will ever beat the look I got from my cat when I walked in the door. You missed them, but I bet they missed you just as much (or more).

8. Having a big fridge again

Remember all those times you couldn't shove the pizza box in the fridge? Well, now you can again. Also, the fridge is stocked when you get there. Nice.

9. Getting to clean your water bottle in a sink that is more than three inches deep

I personally hate having to maneuver my Nalgene to correctly get any water in it all all. Back in a real kitchen this trouble is all gone.

10. Driving your car again

I missed blasting music and going five miles under the speed limit.

11. High water pressure

It's the little things, truly. Good water pressure is a gift.

12. Seeing the stars again

I go to a big city school, and there is way too much light pollution to see any kind of stars in the sky. It's a great reminder how big the universe is.

13. Having a bathtub

I don't really take baths, but just knowing it's there if I wanted to is soothing enough.

14. Actual alone time

Yes, there are times when the roomie isn't around, but being able to just go hide in your room and relax is something we all miss a little bit.

15. Your family, even if you don't admit it

Nothing beats coming home to whoever you call family; the people who support and love you no matter what.

As great as this all is, I still can't wait to get back to college and see my friends and my roommate again!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
