15 Things College Students Are Guilty of Forgetting

Living on top of fellow students is a lot different than living at home.

Being away at college is an unforgettable experience that affects everyone differently. With that being said, there are a few things that all students often times forget. Here's some reinforcement before moving back in or for newcomers living on campus for the first time.

1. Adding water to Easy Mac prior to heating it in the microwave.

Premade cups of food need water to cook properly. Without it, the noodles, or whatever you’re making, will burn and set off the fire alarm.

2. Don’t overcook your popcorn so it burns and sets off the fire alarm.

Speaking of setting off the fire alarm, the cooking instructions on packaging are your friend. Even if you want something well done, chances are it won’t take five minutes to achieve.

3. ...Or pull the alarm or spray the fire hydrant all over the place

Being high on mushrooms and making a mess of your dorm may seem like a funny story, but in fact it’s extremely inconvenient for the cleaning personnel as well as Residence Assistants (RAs). Plus, if you’re caught it could be costly.

4. Hide your booze, and don’t drunkenly tell your RA about it

When someone asks you how your night was, you only have to answer with a word or so. Telling your RA you’re drunk automatically requires them to report you, which results in monetary discipline. As long as no one sees, hears or smells it, it never happened.

5. When disposing of alcohol, don't throw containers away in plain sight

Again, as long as no one sees, hears or smells it, it never happened. Either put your empties in a plastic bag and throw it out, or hand them off to someone of age who can be seen with them.

6. If you go out in public with alcohol, put it in a water bottle

Most states have laws that prohibit all persons from walking around with open containers of alcoholic beverages, especially if they are underage. Either keep your beer cans in your pocket or refill a water bottle with your cocktail.

7. Remember to take your belongings out of the bathroom

Whether it be shampoo, lotion or a toothbrush, remember to remove it from the bathroom when you’re finished. If not, don’t be mad if it accidentally lands in the trashcan.

8. Keep your voices and music down after quiet hours, but be mindful about it at all times.

No one wants to be woken up in the middle of the night because their neighbors are up playing video games or doing god knows what, unless it’s an emergency. This holds true throughout the day when students are studying or finishing projects.

9. Close your door if you’re smoking weed, and cover the smoke detector

Even though it’s only legal in parts of the US, some people do it anyway. If anyone chooses to do it in their room, they better make damn sure to keep the door closed and the smoke detector covered because if not, the fire alarm will go off along with an alert that THEIR room set it off.

10. Pornographic material ought to be kept private, AKA don’t draw penises in the bathroom

Do I REALLY have to explain this one?? A person masturbates in private so why can’t drawings of genitalia be treated with the same amount of respect?

11. “Shots” and “Bad and Boujee” will give your pre-game away

You’re asking for it if you blare either of these songs on the weekend. Either your RA will continuously knock on the door, or they’ll call security (at Susquehanna it’s Public Safety).

12. If you're sharing a room, you shouldn't keep kicking your roommate out to have sex

The occasional sexile is one thing, but don’t make it a habit.

13. It's OK to take a sick day, if you REALLY need it

Don't be out partying the night before an exam. If you have a fever, are vomiting or just can't bring yourself out of bed, then by all means take off. But, if it's just the occasional cold, tough it out.

14. Clean up the common room, or any room, when you're done using it

Put everything back the way you found it and discard your trash. If you accidentally break something, fess up.

Sorry to sound like a mom but...

15. Mind your manners

Everyone employed by the university or college is doing everything in their power to ensure you have the best experience possible. The least you can do is be kind and respectful of others.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
