Last week I got home from college for winter break. In college that is equivalent to about one month. I was so excited… that excitement quickly turned into boredom. It was exciting the first few days as all my high school friends were flying in from their schools. We had a reunion lunch. I went shopping with my best friend who is a senior in high school this year, it was great, like the good old days. Then the next week began. High schoolers still had school- my best friend and sister included. My parents still had work. My friends home from college all had jobs to come back to. I didn't even have a car for the first few days. I was literally stuck at home. It was horrible, but also kind of fun. Here is a list of the few things I did to keep myself busy in this trying time that you may or may not also find useful when you're bored out of your mind.
1. Clean your room
You haven't used it for four months, why not get rid of all that stuff you don't need?
2. Read
College is stressful and a lot of work, any free time you managed to scrounge up probably wasn't spent reading (unless it was John Green's new book because that got put to the top of my to-do list once it came out- but that's just me).
3. Have a dance party
You haven't had a room, or an entire house, to yourself for a while. Take advantage of it. Play your favorite music super loud and have your own party.
4. Bake or cook
I prefer sweets, they're also a little bit easier to make in my opinion, but either way, you probably didn't use the sketchy kitchens in your dorm.
5. Sleep
Don't oversleep because that doesn't help with boredom- you'll be more tired and not want to do anything anyways.
6. Color
Was it last year those adult coloring books became big? I have a bunch left because I never take the time to actually color them. I'm sure you do too if not there's something else for you to do- go out and buy one.
7. Make art
Maybe you don't like coloring but you like drawing or painting or making music- whatever it is you love doing go for it, you have the time.
8. Binge watch a new show
My new show has been Black Mirror, and there are plenty of others on Netflix for you to find and watch, you won't have as much time once school starts again.
9. Go outside
I don't know if it's just Colorado, but winter has been very warm this year (global warming is real maybe?). Anyways, with the decent weather, you might as well take advantage. Go for a walk or sit outside and do one of the things on this list.
10. Exercise
I know there isn't a free gym across the street for you to go to, but the freshman fifteen still applies while on break.
11. Visit your old high school
Actually I tried but apparently, it's frowned upon to just walk up and say you're there to visit your old teachers. If you're going to do this one, make sure you let your teachers know you're coming first.
12. Visit the rest of your family
Yeah, you'll probably see them soon for Christmas, but they miss you too. Go visit grandma, play bingo with her or something, she'd love it.
13. Clean out other rooms?
This is sometimes fun for me, but usually only when I have reached the maximum level of boredom. Your parents will really appreciate it though. Plus, if your siblings wear your clothes more than they wear their own, threaten them with donating their things.
14. Volunteer
I haven't done this one, but it's a great idea to make your time feel worthwhile.
15. Write
With all this extra free time I've written some articles, but writing, in general, is good for your mind. Get out some thoughts that have been bothering you.
I'm out of ideas and am still bored, but I hope these kept you busy at least for a little while.
