Growing up in general is tough; add being plus size into that equation and you've just got a bundle of fun. Every plus size girl has had to deal with a lot of unnecessary problems throughout her life. Not everyone's experience is the same, but ask most girls who grew up plus size and a lot of the answers have glaring similarities. These are just some of the few.
1. Dress shopping was hell.
Homecoming, Prom, Winter Formal. If an event involved a pretty dress and heels, it was probably your worst nightmare. Not because you didn’t like dressing up, but because finding a dress that fits well and was affordable for your high school budget was pretty much a myth.
2. Crying internal when you walked into a classroom to see the chairs had the desks attached to them.
Why, just why?
3. "You're so pretty for a fat girl."
Um, no actually I’m just pretty…Thanks.
4. Being picked last in gym class because everyone assumed fat = not athletic.
And then you always came in clutch for the team that got stuck with you because you wanted to prove them wrong.
5. Swimsuit season was the bane of your existence.
It’s extremely hard to find a swimsuit that made you feel comfortable going out in public in. Even in a one-piece or tankini, your thighs were still out to play, and pants were not an option in 90-degree heat.
6. Those trendy necklaces from Claire's were always too small for your neck.
It was either, get choked by cheap metal or just forfeit necklaces altogether.
7. Dating was a mess.
Most of your crushes were either straight up not into thick girls, or too embarrassed to admit it.
8. Getting laughed at when you say you like sports.
Because apparently body size indicates what your interests can and can't be.
9. You always quietly worried when taking trips to amusement parks.
The ultimate nightmare for any plus size girl is getting into the seat of a ride and finding the seat belt does not fit.
10. Getting stared at for going to the gym.
Wait, I’m sorry but isn’t this the place you go to lose weight, which is what society keeps telling me to do? So why am I being looked at like I have three heads? I should get a standing ovation for showing up here!
11. Shopping at the same stores as your friends was out of the question.
The cool-kid stores your classmates loved liked Hollister, American Eagle, and Aeropostale never carried your size, or if they did, you ended up looking like a stuffed sausage.
12. Always being super conscious of the double standard big girls face with food.
Eat pizza: get judged for being glutenous. Eat salad: get judged for “pretending” to be healthy. There’s no winning here people.
13. Knowing everyone secretly wanted assets like yours.
Holler at the busty, big booty girl squad.
14. The feeling when you found a new plus size role model that was slaying the game.
Praises hands for Melissa McCarthy, Rebel Wilson, Adele, America Ferrara, and Tess Holliday.
15. When you realized your body is not the most important thing about you.
There are so many other traits that make you great. Your gorgeous smile, your intoxicating laugh, your quick wit, or your empathetic nature. You are special and worthy of all the love in the world, regardless of your size.
