Before I came to college, I thought I was a pretty street savvy individual. I knew how to check the oil in my car, and I could name the branches of our government. I would say I was on top of my "intellectual game." That is, until I started college, and started my transition from a teenager who lived with her parents to college student, with no money, entering the real world. I realized that I didn't learn as much in high school as I thought. Here are the things we all wish we learned in high school
1. How to pay attention for the whole two-hour lecture class.
2. How to correctly fill out a W9.
3. How to correctly take notes (without a PowerPoint to assure us of what is important to know).
4. How to read a chapter in a textbook and outline it with the information that actually matters.
5. How to make enough money in a month to pay rent, buy groceries, get gas and function as a human.
6. How to manage our time.
7. How to go to the grocery store and only buy what we need, not just what we want.
8. How to pack a suitcase and keep it under 50 pounds.
9. How to separate colors, hots and colds.
10. How to understand what the nutrition facts mean.
11. How to know when chicken is ready.
12. How to contour (aye, ladies).
13. A feasible savings plan to help put away money.
14. How create a resume, write a cover letter and form a proper email.
15. What medicines to take for each kind of illness. (And yes, hangovers count, as well.)
Don't get me wrong, I know not every single one of these is a realistic topic to learn in a high school class, regardless, once we get to college the real world is upon us (no matter how hard we try to avoid it). Maybe if I would have learned how to pay attention to a boring lecture class, I would be taking notes right now rather than writing this article. The point I am trying to make is that you can't exactly learn how to be an adult, it’s just something you learn over time. Don't stress yourself out thinking that you need to have it all together right now. Growing up is hard and there is a lot of things we don’t know about the world, and even ourselves yet.
