When songs come out, we often just listen and sing along, not knowing the true meaning behind the lyrics. If you listen to the lyrics, you’ll see what the artist is really saying to you. These songs are there for you to remind you to be who you are and that someone is always there.
1) Britt Nicole - "Better"
Baby, I've been there/ I've seen it all before/ Baby, I was you/ Hoping for something more/ Baby, I promise/ Cross my heart that in time it'll get better,/ It'll get better
On a sad day when everything seems hopeless, listen to this song to remind yourself that you’re not alone. It’s hard not to believe Britt Nicole when she belts out, "It’ll get better" over and over.
2) Hailee Steinfeld - "Most Girls"
You know some days you feel so good in your own skin/ But it's okay if you wanna change the body that you came in/ Cause you look greatest when you feel like a damn queen
Most girls are smart and strong and beautiful/ Most girls work hard, go far, we are unstoppable/ Most girls, our fight to make every day/ No two are the same/ I wanna be like, I wanna be like most girls
This upbeat jam will have you dancing in no time. The lyrics under the beat, however, remind you to just be you and not someone else.
3) Hailee Steinfeld - "Love Myself"
Gonna love myself, no, I don't need anybody else (Hey)/ Gonna love myself, no, I don't need anybody else(I love me)/ Can't help myself, no, I don't need anybody else/ Anytime, day or night/ (I love me)
Another upbeat jam by Hailee Steinfeld to remind you to love yourself just like the title says. Loving yourself can be hard, but once you do, scream it to the world!
4) Lauren Alaina - "Road Less Traveled"
Why do you keep on staring?/ That mirror, mirror, it ain't fair at all (mm-mm)/ Dress sizes can't define, don't let the world decide what's beautiful/No
Show what you got and just own it/ No, they can't tear you apart/ If you trust your rebel heart, ride it into battle/ Don't be afraid, take the road less traveled/
Lauren Alaina’s lyrics hit close to home. This song reminds me to trust myself and not let others define what is beautiful. For all the country fans needing a reminder that they are beautiful, this is the song to listen to.
5) Christina Aguilera - "Fighter"
After all you put me through, You think I'd despise you,/ But in the end I wanna thank you,'Cause you've made me that much stronger
'Cause if it wasn't for all that you tried to do, I wouldn't know/ Just how capable I am to pull through/ So I wanna say thank you
'Cause it/ Makes me that much stronger/ Makes me work a little bit harder/ It makes me that much wiser/ So thanks for making me a fighter/ Made me learn a little bit faster/ Made my skin a little bit thicker/ Makes me that much smarter
A little throwback empowerment song to bring out the sass in you. Christina Aguilera reminds us that breakups make us stronger and teach us something.
6) Andra Day - "Rise Up"
You're broken down and tired/ Of living life on a merry-go-round/ And you can't find the fighter/ But I see it in you so we gonna walk it out/ And move mountains
And I'll rise up/ I'll rise like the day/ I'll rise up/ I'll rise unafraid/ I'll rise up/ And I'll do it a thousand times again/ And I'll rise up/ High like the waves/ I'll rise up
If you’re in need of a slower song, turn this one up and listen Andra Day’s powerful voice. This song always reminds me that I just have to keep going; there isn’t a choice.
7) Britt Nicole - "Work Of Art"
I know you, I know you/ Don't think you're beautiful/ Cause we don't look like/ The girls on the cover of Vogue/ But I wish I, I wish I/ Could show you what I see/ You got it/ A work of art
Comparing is poison/ It's killing you and me/ The lies of perfection/ We ain't gonna believe/ I wish I/ Could show you what I see/ On the outside, on the inside/ That's true masterpiece
Every freckle, every scar/ You're a work of art/ Baby, that's just who you are/ You're a work of art/ Every freckle, every scar/ I'm a work of art/ Baby, that's just who we are
Personally one of my favorite songs by Britt Nicole because of how much I relate to it. Every girl should listen to this song, especially when you’re self conscious. Body image is an issue I struggle with as well, but this song has a way of making me forget my insecurities for a few minutes.
8) Jessie J - "Who You Are"
I stare at my reflection in the mirror:/ "Why am I doing this to myself?"/ Losing my mind on a tiny error,/ I nearly left the real me on the shelf.
It's okay not to be okay./ Tears don't mean you're losing, everybody's bruising,/ Just be true to who you are!
This is another song girls who have ever felt insecure about their bodies would relate to. Jessie J always reminds me to just be me, and sometimes that's all we need to do.
9) Alessia Cara - "Scars To Your Beautiful"
Oh she don't see the light that's shining/Deeper than the eyes can find it/Maybe we have made her blind/So she tries to cover up her pain, and cut her woes away/'Cause CoverGirls don't cry after their face is made
You should know you're beautiful just the way you are/ And you don't have to change a thing/ The world could change its heart/ No scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful
She has dreams to be an envy, so she's starving/ You know, "Covergirls eat nothing."/ She says, "Beauty is pain and there's beauty in everything."/ "What's a little bit of hunger?"/ "I can go a little while longer," she fades away/ She don't see her perfect, she don't understand she's worth it/ Or that beauty goes deeper than the surface
So to all the girls that's hurting/ Let me be your mirror, help you see a little bit clearer/ The light that shines within
I’m in love with this song and how relatable it is. It’s another song on body image, but Alessia Cara brings up the issue with models. The media portrays this image of models being stick thin, causing girls to believe beauty = weight. Remember, you’re beautiful just the way you are, no matter how much you weigh.
10) Bea Miller - "Paper Doll"
I'm not a paper doll/Can't make me what you want/You just build me up and tear me down/ Enough's enough/Go, leave me alone/Cut me down but I won't fall/I'm not a paper doll
For anyone being bullied or has felt not good enough, this is the song to listen to. You can hear the emotion in her voice as the song progresses. This song is a reminder that no one can manipulate me because I’m not just an object.
11) Mary J Blige - "Doubt"
You said I'd never be a leader/ You said I'd never wear a crown/ If I wanted to be someone/ I should learn to settle down
I made it to the end/ I nearly paid the cost /I lost a lot of friends/ I sacrificed a lot/ I'd do it all again/ 'Cause I made it to the top/ But I can't keep doubting myself anymore
Now you're looking at a leader/ Now you're staring at a queen/ You said I'll never be someone/ But now I'm pulling all the strings
This song reminds me to stop listening to the voices in my head and to stop doubting myself. Most of us have insecurities and this song helps me feel like a queen. I think I’ll always battle my self-doubt, but I have this song to help me fight through those moments.
12) Martina McBride - "I'm Gonna Love You Through It"
When you’re weak, I’ll be strong/ When you let go, I’ll hold on/ When you need to cry, I swear that I’ll be there to dry your eyes/ When you feel lost and scared to death,/ Like you can’t take one more step/ Just take my hand, together we can do it/ I’m gonna love you through it.
This beautiful song hits close to home, and every time I watch the music video, I’m reminded of the war my mom endured. Most of us can relate to someone telling them that they are there for them when you’re going through a rough time. The music video gets me every time, so keep a tissue nearby.
13) Britt Nicole - "The Sun Is Rising"
You're gonna make it/ And the night can only last for so long/ Whatever you're facing/ If your heart is breaking/ There's a promise for the ones who just hold on/ Lift up your eyes and see/ The sun is rising
Another Britt Nicole song to remind you that it won’t stay dark forever. It puts in perspective that tomorrow’s a new day and I can get through the day.
14) Miley Cyrus - "The Climb"
Every step I'm takin'/ Every move I make feels lost with no direction,/ My faith is shakin'/ But I, I gotta keep tryin'/ Gotta keep my head held high
There's always gonna be another mountain/ I'm always gonna wanna make it move/ Always gonna be an uphill battle/ Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose/ Ain't about how fast I get there/ Ain't about what's waitin' on the other side/ It's the climb
I still know every word of my all time favorite throwback Miley song. The lyrics are so relatable, and after all these years, I still put this song on when I’m sad.
15) Colbie Caillat - "Try"
Put your makeup on/Get your nails done/Curl your hair/Run the extra mile/Keep it slim/So they like you. Do they like you?
You don't have to try so hard/ You don't have to give it all away/ You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up/ You don't have to change a single thing/ You don't have to try
Wait a second,/ Why should you care, what they think of you
When you're all alone, by yourself/ Do you like you? Do you like you?
You don't have to bend until you break/ Take your makeup off/ Let your hair down/T ake a breath/Look into the mirror, at yourself/ Don't you like you?/ Cause I like you
I think most teenage girls go through a phase where they will do whatever they can just to fit in. Your opinion of yourself is the only one that matters and it’s time to start loving yourself, flaws and all.
