15 Signs You Might Be An Independent Woman
USA TODAY

I love being independent. I like the idea of being able to take care of myself and have my own life. At 21 years old, this may be the only time in my life that I get to be selfish. That may sound a little condescending, but as soon as you get married and have kids, you can't go back to the "good old days." So, here are 15 signs you might be an independent woman like me.

1. You're sick and tired of people asking you if you have a significant other.

Yes, I'm still single. No, I'm not concerned about ending up alone. My success in life is not dependent on my relationship status.

2. You know what you want out of life and will not change your aspirations for anyone.

I will work hard to achieve my dreams. I can do anything boys can do... and better.

3. You've realized that your voice is important and meant to be heard.

As Eleanor Roosevelt wrote, "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."

4. Your friends and family have started calling you a feminist.

You may be a little offended at first, but you soon get over it. You realize that you speak for women whose voices have been silenced all around the world. You rock that feminist label.

5. When you saw Meryl Streep in "The Devil Wears Prada," you realized who you wanted to be when you grew up.

She is completely fabulous and in charge. Goals.

6. You don't understand why some things just don't go your way.

This is a confusing life fact for us strong, independent women.

7. On the subject, others don't seem to always understand you.

Yes, we're not typical women. But then again, wouldn't that be rather boring?

8. You love treating yourself.

There are times when you just need some alone time. Being around people can be rather draining, and you need some time to recuperate.

9. You're completely confident in who you are.

Jennifer Lawrence, we salute you.

10. You genuinely enjoy learning.

We love lectures, debates, and further delves into endless pools of knowledge. Being our own person with individual interests is really important to us.

11. Society thinks you have some secret vendetta against men.

I'm only going to say this once. We do not think men are the source of all of our problems. Those that do think that are not independent women; they're just hateful.

12. You don't mind paying for the date.

After a time of being broke college students, we understand that the guy shouldn't always pay for the date. As independent women, this doesn't scare us. If we like you enough, we're more than happy to spend the cash.

13. Food is a large part of your life.

Healthy food to us is clearly food that makes us happy. All you other women can eat your lettuce and be sad.

14. You are commonly stereotyped as someone who looks like they have it all together.

Truthfully, not a single one of us has it all together. But sometimes, you just have to fake it until you make it.

15. You were not born an independent, confident, beautiful creature.

Becoming this way was not an overnight change. You grew into this awesome person. Never apologize for how great you are.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
