15 Salads In New Orleans That Are Actually Good
Abbie Sussman

In a city where fried food is the norm, the search for salad often hits a dead end. However, there are some restaurants in this lovely city that do offer some salads that one can consider "normal" and healthy. From your classic Caesar to some crazy inventive salads, here are 15 of my favorites:

1. Cobb Salad at Hivolt Coffee

Sicker than your average Cobb—the mustard vinaigrette is what makes it so great. Nothing goes greater with this salad than one of Hivolt's famous muffins.

2. Grilled Salmon Salad at Superior Seafood

The perfect all in one meal. A large portion of salmon and grilled veggies all atop some lovely mixed greens—what could get any better?

3. Grilled Heart of Romaine Caesar Salad at Boucherie

As delicious as it is gorgeous. Don't be afraid to get messy with this perfectly composed twist on the classic Caesar salad.

4. Health Nut Salad at Charcoal's Gourmet Burger Bar

For the health nut, of course. Not what one would expect to find on the menu of a burger bar, but hey—I'm not complaining.

5. Maple Pecan and Feta Salad at Milk Bar

When you think Milk Bar, you normally think of the ooey gooey goodness that sits between two slices of delicious ciabatta bread, right? Wrong. Start expanding your horizons my friends. Milk Bar has AMAZING salads as well. This one's a fan favorite.

6. Seared Tuna Salad at the Rum House

Tacos and Rum House normally go hand in hand, but if you're craving the yummy and leafy goodness of a salad, this one's a winner.

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2016%2F11%2F22%2F636153851120953572692503445_6361535116312902581887475655_Screen%2520Shot%25202016-11-21%2520at%25201.52.04%2520PM.png&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=178&h=59d948f5eeb9e5108c7510e70c4093b219d6cbfa6f5dcfedffda62517380b06e&size=980x&c=356659644 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2016%252F11%252F22%252F636153851120953572692503445_6361535116312902581887475655_Screen%252520Shot%2525202016-11-21%252520at%2525201.52.04%252520PM.png%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D178%26h%3D59d948f5eeb9e5108c7510e70c4093b219d6cbfa6f5dcfedffda62517380b06e%26size%3D980x%26c%3D356659644%22%7D" expand=1 original_size="1x1"]

7. Kale Salad at Johnny Sanchez

Leave it to the great duo of Aarón Sánchez and John Besh to concoct this bad boy. This salad combines everything that you could ever want into one dish—salty, sweet, crunchy, zesty. You name it, this salad's got it.

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2016%2F11%2F22%2F636153851124057735708907360_636153514196755033-569982668_Screen%2520Shot%25202016-11-21%2520at%25201.56.33%2520PM.png&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=837&h=fc2d15a50c57e5e6d78979d259736df7191502a967c897fffb175672d9405e11&size=980x&c=2182111652 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2016%252F11%252F22%252F636153851124057735708907360_636153514196755033-569982668_Screen%252520Shot%2525202016-11-21%252520at%2525201.56.33%252520PM.png%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D837%26h%3Dfc2d15a50c57e5e6d78979d259736df7191502a967c897fffb175672d9405e11%26size%3D980x%26c%3D2182111652%22%7D" expand=1 original_size="1x1"]

8. Gyro Salad at Lebanon's Cafe

So simple yet so delicious. Order hummus to eat along with it, and add feta. Huge game changer.

9. Parmesan Reggiano Salad at St. James Cheese Company

What could be lovelier? Fancy parmesan and salami atop mixed greens dressed in only the most delicious dressing. Compensate for the fact that you went for the so-called "lighter option" by ordering a cheese plate and some wine.

10. Mediterranean Quinoa Salad at Satsuma

Definitely one of the most well-known salad in all of New Orleans, and with good reason. The sprinkled feta and the scrumptious lemon vinaigrette are what make this baby so famous. Oh, and did I mention the hummus toast on the side?

11. Greek Salad at Slice Pizzeria

Exactly what you would think it is. A simple yet delicious classic that is sometimes necessary in the sea of crazy and creative salads that are around these days.

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2016%2F11%2F22%2F636153851128120668-946459613_6361528717276926141097431773_Screen%2520Shot%25202016-11-20%2520at%25207.03.53%2520PM.png&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=178&h=4a4d541cc8a3d99157053fc4b46e8d3275889e14e2717c16eb63e132909e72e8&size=980x&c=1645625739 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2016%252F11%252F22%252F636153851128120668-946459613_6361528717276926141097431773_Screen%252520Shot%2525202016-11-20%252520at%2525207.03.53%252520PM.png%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D178%26h%3D4a4d541cc8a3d99157053fc4b46e8d3275889e14e2717c16eb63e132909e72e8%26size%3D980x%26c%3D1645625739%22%7D" expand=1 original_size="1x1"]

12. The Eagle Street at Good Bird (located inside St. Roch Market)

Lemony, yummy dressed arugula with pecans, parmesan, and only the best of chicken (this restaurant does NOT live down to its name). The addition of avocado was definitely a power move, and a good one at that.

13. Caesar Salad at Louisiana Pizza Kitchen

Sometimes you just need a good ol' plain and simple Caesar salad. And when you do, Louisiana Pizza Kitchen is the place to get it.

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2016%2F11%2F22%2F636153851127651916-1040723657_6361535285865692201154376947_Screen%2520Shot%25202016-11-21%2520at%25202.20.30%2520PM.png&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=19&h=c59243746406c820938c0da6b69dba44a0b57cc3d8be20529a802b1e52b7f1d9&size=980x&c=1808100229 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2016%252F11%252F22%252F636153851127651916-1040723657_6361535285865692201154376947_Screen%252520Shot%2525202016-11-21%252520at%2525202.20.30%252520PM.png%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D19%26h%3Dc59243746406c820938c0da6b69dba44a0b57cc3d8be20529a802b1e52b7f1d9%26size%3D980x%26c%3D1808100229%22%7D" expand=1 original_size="1x1"]

14. Roasted Cauliflower and Garden Vegetable Salad at Reginelli's

Nothing simple about this concoction. Roasted veggies and PANCETTA. What mad person thought of this?!

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2016%2F11%2F22%2F636153851127651916-1569830393_6361537914316507211138226315_Screen%2520Shot%25202016-11-21%2520at%25209.38.09%2520PM.png&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=467&h=0175a421456f970f19918a62f4fb08174ce7dad67e4a4ea0de2d5839301f26b5&size=980x&c=2852830152 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2016%252F11%252F22%252F636153851127651916-1569830393_6361537914316507211138226315_Screen%252520Shot%2525202016-11-21%252520at%2525209.38.09%252520PM.png%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D467%26h%3D0175a421456f970f19918a62f4fb08174ce7dad67e4a4ea0de2d5839301f26b5%26size%3D980x%26c%3D2852830152%22%7D" expand=1 original_size="1x1"]

15. Chimi Chimi Bang Bang at JuiceNOLA (located inside St. Roch Market)

Almost a salad, almost a quinoa bowl—you be the judge. This dish's identity crisis certainly does not take away from how delicious it is.

Bet you didn't think New Orleans actually had 15 decent salads, did you? Well, there you have it. Never eat fried food if you don't want to ever again. Enjoy all of the green and crunchy salads that NOLA has to offer!

6 Questions To Ask Yourself When Cleaning Up Your Room

This holiday break is the perfect time to get away from the materialistic frenzy of the world and turn your room into a decluttered sanctuary.

Cleaning isn’t just for spring. In fact, I find school’s holiday break to be a very effective time for decluttering. You’re already being bombarded by the materialistically-infatuated frenzy of society’s version of Christmas, Hanukah, etc. It’s nice to get out of the claustrophobic avarice of the world and come home to a clean, fresh, and tidy room. While stacking up old books, CDs, and shoes may seem like no big deal, it can become a dangerous habit. The longer you hang onto something, whether it be for sentimental value or simply routine, it becomes much harder to let go of. Starting the process of decluttering can be the hardest part. To make it a little easier, get out three boxes and label them Donate, Storage, and Trash. I'm in the middle of the process right now, and while it is quite time consuming, it is also so relieving and calming to see how much you don't have to deal with anymore. Use these six questions below to help decide where an item gets sorted or if it obtains the value to stay out in your precious sanctuary from the world.

Why I Don't Write (Or Read) An "Open Letter To My Future Husband/Wife"

Because inflated expectations and having marriage as your only goal are overrated.

Urban Intellectuals

Although I have since changed my major I remember the feverish hysteria of applying to nursing school--refreshing your email repeatedly, asking friends, and frantically calculating your GPA at ungodly hours of the night. When my acceptance came in I announced the news to friends and family with all the candor of your average collegiate. I was met with well wishes, congratulations, and interrogations on the program's rank, size, etc. Then, unexpectedly, I was met with something else.
