15 Reasons Why It's OK To Ask For Help

Have you ever needed help but felt too embarrassed to ask and dumb for needing it? I’m not just referring to the inability to reach the top self in your kitchen cabinet, or not knowing your Spanish homework instructions. This listicle is about asking for help for all of life’s happenings.

1. Everyone will need help

From parents to presidents, everyone has needed some assistance. You are not the first, and you won’t be the last. So ask! No matter my age, I'll always call my mom for her advice.

2. It takes courage to admit you need help

Be brave! You can do it. It might be scary, but it is worth it! It is so easy for people to down play their need for help. You don't have to brush it under the rug.

3. Your connections strengthen

Asking for help creates better connections with everyone in your life. Your teachers and professors will assist, your boss will appreciate you and your loved ones will support you. So use office hours with your professors, have a one-on-one meeting with your boss and consider asking your friends for advice on what do when you are upset.

4. Be real with yourself

Be honest. Be true. If you need it ask! You know yourself better than anyone else. Look out for yourself and don't be your own worst enemy. You don't have to be mean to yourself and try to talk yourself out if it.

5. Why make life more complicated?

It is not taking the easy way. It is taking the humble path. So pick up your feet, dust yourself off and walk in the direction of the nearest office, meeting or friend and take the steps you need to get the help you deserve.

6. You don’t have to face life alone

We all have people in our lives willing to help from friends, classmates, roommates, co-workers, boyfriends, girlfriends to parents and professors. No one is alone.

7. Honesty is the best policy

First heard in elementary school and still true today, honesty is the best policy. Be honest with yourself, and be honest with your loved ones.

8. It’s not a sign of weakness

Get the feeling of being dumb and weak out of your head. No need to get down on yourself. In your head, you might be able to make up a whole situation about how you don't need help or you might be telling yourself, "I'll be fine." Listen to your heart and realize you are neither dumb nor weak.

9. No need to feel embarrassed

Why feel embarrassed? No need for that! You should feel embarrassment for needing help. The only thing worth being embarrassed about are terrible middle school haircuts, ridiculous childhood stories your mom brings up when your boyfriend comes over or that I once accidentally dyed my hair orange. Of course, I am kidding, but seriously. Don't feel embarrassed.

10. Resources. Use your resources

From university staff and tutoring to asking a friend, help is around any corner! Use your library or tutoring centers for academic help. Consider counseling services. Talk to a trusted friend about what is happening.

11. Accept help now. Empathy later

Your ability to seek help will allow you to be emphatic when the tables are turned. If you get the help you need now, for whatever reason, later on in life you might be able to assist in helping a friend when they need it.

12. You will feel a lot better

Get the weight off your shoulder! Get the thoughts of doubt and overthinking out of your head. Give yourself the gift of a clear mind and receive the help you need.

13. Support is everywhere

Just be open and be humble. From your best friend of 13 years to a trusted adult or medical professional, help is at any door.

14. You’ll possibly need help more than once

Asking for help is a normal occurrence and often will happen again. Not everyone was able to ride a bike the first try of was able to tie their shoes without some help. Whether you are in your 20s, 30s or your 60s, help is something everyone needs.

15. Is it OK to not be perfect

No one is perfect. No one knows everything. Everyone needs help. No one goes through life with everything falling perfectly on place. Quote the Hannah Montana song if you must. But know it's true, and please stop comparing yourself to others!

Be brave! Be humble! Get the help you need! Whether it is academic, emotional or anything else. Be courageous, be honest!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
