15 Promises I Made When I Decided To Study Abroad

A life-changing experience.

15 Promises I Made When I Decided To Study Abroad
The Wanderlust Project

At most colleges, only a fraction of the student body studies abroad. Whether it's due to expenses, homesickness or serious FOMO, college kids don't want to leave their college bubble. If you talk to someone that has studied abroad, they'll tell you it was the best decision they have ever made. That sounds like something to take part in.

So, if you still have time in your busy years left at your university, look into going abroad. Maybe with a few friends, maybe alone. Regardless, you won't regret it. As someone who has never been out of the country, I can promise you what I'll do when I head overseas. And a few things I'll miss.

1. I'll Be Independent

Despite the decent amount of homesickness I'll have for my family, it won't take away from the fact that I'm surviving by myself in a different country. And that's an awesome feeling.

2. I Will Eat A Lot

French food, Italian food, Spanish food. You name it; I'll eat it.

3. I'll Travel While Traveling

Best part about Europe? (or really anywhere you go) Everything is so close and on the journey, I will definitely have a glass of wine to pass the time.

4. I Won't Take Too Many Photos

I want to enjoy the moment. Not focus on getting the right shot in front of a building or at a meal. Instagram can hold off on my post.

5. But I Will Take Some

But I'll take pictures. So I can remember everything.

6. I'll Talk to People

There is history everywhere. Being a part of that history will be an experience unparalleled.

8. I Will Spend My Money Well

My bank account will drain. But it will be the best cash I've ever spent.

9. I'll Be Inspired

I'm not a painter or a singer or a musician, but I am a writer. And I can imagine that what I'll see will inspire some crazy words.

10. I'll Be Disconnected

I'll put my phone down a lot. I won't snapchat or live tweet my day. I will be immersed in the moment.

11. I'll Take Risks

And do things I've never done before.

12. I'll Learn

It's not all fun and games, but it will be more interesting. The knowledge I want to gain and I'll receive will be endless.

13. I'll Appreciate My University

And the new country I am living in.

14. I Will Come Back With Stories

That people will probably get tired of hearing, but I don't care at all.

15. I'll Have a Life-changing Experience

It will be one of the most amazing trips of my life and I am so blessed to have this opportunity. I won't take it for granted — how could I?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
