Sure, the beach is a fantastic destination for your summer weekends. But when it rains and the beach is no longer optional or your friends have too bad of a sunburn to be out there again, what will you do? It's summer vacation, and I'm sure you want to live it up as best you can. You may not have the money to spend on a lavish vacation, but don't worry! There are so many local places to see and new things to experience right in New England.
1. Acadia National Park, ME
There's more than just hiking here, so even if walking through trails isn't your thing, you'll find something that will appeal to you at this beautiful national park!
2. The Breakers, RI
Ever drive by a mansion you thought was disgustingly large? Just wait till you see these.
3. Mystic Aquarium/Seaport, CT
Not only is it a beautiful area to walk around, shop, and eat in, but there is even an added touch of history here. For those with kids, the aquarium is the perfect place to expose the little ones to wildlife they may not otherwise see.
4. Museum of Fine Arts, MA
Boston is a city that offers something for everyone, no matter your age or interest. Perhaps one of the most universally-enjoyable sites to visit, however, is the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA). You won't be disappointed!
5. Mount Washington, NH
If this view doesn't convince you to make the trip, I don't know what will.
6. Faneuil Hall, MA
Another Boston hallmark, Faneuil Hall is an indoor-outdoor complex that is perfect for those iffy weather days.
7. Trapp Family Lodge, VT
This gorgeous family spot in the mountains of Vermont is the perfect place for adventure, fun, and memories that will last a lifetime
8. Six Flags New England, MA
Certainly, you have to be someone who enjoys coasters. Even if you don't like the intense loop-de-loop ones, there are less nerve-wracking rides for everyone. If you're set against all roller coasters, there is always the water park area, as well as fun games you can play.
9. Boothbay Harbor,
This a place I have been going to since I was kid, so I may be a little biased. But the truth is, the food is incredible, the people are friendly, the town is tiny and shopping is incredibly fun. There are whale and seal watches you can go on, harbor cruises, and, of course, ice cream shops in the heart of the harbor. It's a perfect weekend getaway!
10. Roger Williams Park Zoo, RI
Whether it's raining or not, the animals at the zoo will still be there. Enjoy the wildlife at this beautiful zoo.
11. Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods Casino, CT
These two casinos are located in the southeast corner of Connecticut. While they are most known for their casinos, each offers a variety of activities and events that are suitable for adults and children alike. Shopping, arcades, a bowling alley, movie theater, top-of-the-line dining, concerts and other shows are all part of the fun.
12. Santa's Village, NH
Did you think Christmas in July was a joke? I mean, okay, so maybe a Christmas-themed day isn't exactly what you pictured during your summer. But why not? It's different, fun, and still incorporates the element of summer adventure you're after!
13. Killington Ski Resort, VT
I haven't been to this ski resort, but from the photos I've seen, I know it can't be a bad time.
14. Block Island, RI
The only guarantee on this island is that you'll have great memories to look back on.
15. Salem, MA
Visiting Salem in the fall is prime, but regardless of the time of year you visit, you are sure to have a blast. Learning about the witch trials in more depth and understanding the historical value of this beautiful city is a memory to treasure. Don't be too spooked!
