15 Phrases Every Southerner Knows

If you live the south, you know that we talk a little differently than people from other parts of the country. We have our own little sayings and words that we like to claim as our own. I have compiled together 15 phrases that you have either said or had said to you:

1. Bless Your Heart

You have probably gotten this phrase if you have probably done something not so intelligent, or it is a very sincere sympathetic phrase. It is all in the delivery.

2. Fixin' To

If you're not from the south you probably think this phrase is about fixing something that has been broken. However, you would be wrong. Fixin' To is the equivalent of "about to".

3. There's A Storm Brewing

If you have ever seen a storm appear out of nowhere, you can feel the weather change and can smell the rain. This can also be used when you can see someone getting very upset and frustrated.

4. Over Yonder

Not everyone uses this phrase, but it simply means "over there". This term can be used for both short and far distances.

5. She Was Madder Than A Wet Hen

Some of you may have heard the phrase, "She was madder than a hornet", but both have the same connotation: someone is very mad.

6. Y'all

This is probably the most famous of all. When you're in other parts of the country and you say "y'all" it is almost an immediate give away of where you live! But hey, this is probably the most popular contraction ever!

7. I Reckon

This is another phrase that is not used all that often, but still has a place on this list. I reckon is mostly used when trying to recall something!

8. She's As Pretty As A Peach

If you have ever been to Georgia, I don't even need to explain this one!

9. If The Creek Don't Rise

This basically means "we will be there unless something out of our control stops us". If someone says this to you, you can almost guarantee they are going to be there!

10. Hold Your Horses

I say this phrase the most! It is not only fun to say, but is a nicer way of saying, "calm down" or "slow down" or "chill..."

11. As All Get Out

If you hear this phrase, you're in for a real treat! This can be used in many differnet ways. For example, "He was as funny as all get out", " I was surprised as all get out", or "it was bad as all get out"! You better hold on to your britches and get comfortable because you have a good story to listen to!

12. Heavens To Betsy

This is perfect for almost every scenario! It could be used to show surprise or sadness or even anger!

13. Hush Your Mouth

This one is pretty self explanatory....

14. Too Big For His Britches

We all know that one guy who thinks he is all that and a bag of chips. We have a nice way of pointing out those cocky people who they they are too good for everyone(:

15. Can't Never Could

If you think you can you can. If you think you can't, you can't. But we in the south like to make things more interesting and say, "Can't Never Could"

Maybe next time you are having a conversation with someone, try and either county how many times they use one of these phrases, or see how many you can throw in yourself!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
