It's that time of the year again. That time when we court our fears, dress up in costume, and relish in the one day when you are justified to eat your weight in sugary sweets. That's right -- it's Halloween. And if you're anything like me, you may like to spend the month of October indulging in Friday night flicks to get yourself in the mood for Oct. 31.
Well, whether you're a horror movie fanatic or just looking for a funny, easygoing themed show, I have 15 movies and shows to add to your queue.
1. "The Nightmare Before Christmas"
This Tim Burton classic is the perfect way to start off your Halloween-themed flicks. "The Nightmare Before Christmas" is a cute family flick, following the life of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloweentown, as he discovers and attempts to unravel the mystery of Christmas
2. "The Awakening"
If you're a fan of horror movies with a twist, then "The Awakening" is for you. In this British horror film, you'll meet Florence Cathcart, an author and ghost-hunter, who is called to investigate the paranormal activities happening at a boys boarding school.
3. "Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet the Wolfman"
This family movie is perfect for a night with the kids. In this animated adventure, Alvin is convinced that his creepy neighbor Mr. Talbot is harboring a monstrous secret. But as Alvin's investigation deepens, his sweet brother Theodore, who has been reluctantly cast in their school's production of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," begins to discover his own inner monster.
4. "Pet Sematary"
No Halloween fright fest would be complete without a movie from Stephen King, the master of fright himself. After the Creeds family moves to Maine, their luck seems to take a turn for the worse. When the family cat dies, a local neighbor suggests burying the animal in the ground near the old pet cemetary, but the site has disasterous effects on those who are buried there.
5. "The Addams Family"
This 1991 classic depicts the tale of the Addams family who must stop a fraud from cheating them out of their house and fortune. "The Addams Family" is the perfect movie for a quirky and creepy night at home.
6. "The Babadook"
For fans of psychological horror movies, "The Babadook" is the film for you. "The Babadook" depicts the tale of a troubled widow, who discovers that her son is telling the truth about a monster that has taken over their home through the disturbing pages of a children's book.
7. "Corpse Bride"
Tim Burton's "Corpse Bride" tells the story of Victor, whose arranged marriage is interrupted when he accidentally marries Emily, a corpse, after practicing his vows and is taken to the land below. Now he must race to get back to the land above before his fiance Victoria is married to the villainous Barkis Bittern. For a cute and fun night, the "Corpse Bride" is the movie to watch.
8. "Orphan"
After the loss of their unborn child, Kate and John decide to adopt a child, and are drawn to a little girl named Esther. But as a series of dangerous events begins to unfold, the couple begins to suspect that Esther is not as angelic as she may seem. For fans of dramatic thrillers, "Orphan" is the movie for you.
9. "Beetlejuice"
After the Maitlands die in a car accident, they find themselves the stuck as the ghosts of their old residence home. But when the Deetzes move in, the Maitlands are forced to call on the help of Beetlejuice, whose rambunctious behavior may prove dangerous for them all. "Beetlejuice" is a great movie for a fun night at home.
10. "The Shining"
In this dramatic thriller, Jack Torrance, plagued with writer's block, hopes to find a cure when he takes his family to the Overlook Hotel. Soon, though, his discovery of the hotel's dark secrets begins his own unraveling. Stephen King's "The Shining" is the perfect movie to add to your Friday night fright list.
11. "Edward Scissorhands"
This Tim Burton classic brings us the tale of Edward Scissorhands, a young man who must navigate as an outcast after his scientist creator leaves him with long scissor blades in place of hands. For a sweet and gentle night at home, I highly suggest you add "Edward Scissorhands" to your movie list.
12. "Sweeney Todd"
This musical is not really about Halloween, but you can count on Tim Burton to bring the thrills. "Sweeney Todd" is the dramatic tale of a London barber who, after being wrongly exiled for 15 years, returns to exact his revenge on the evil Judge Turpin.
13. "Haunted Mansion"
For those who may be searching for a Disney classic, I would suggest "The Haunted Mansion." This comedic thriller follows the tale of the Evers family, as their family vacation quickly turns into a nightmare after they make a stop at a sinister mansion, and now must navigate their way through ghosts to break an ancient curse.
14. "The Phantom of the Opera"
This also isn't a Halloween movie, but the dramatic tale of the brooding Phantom's schemes to claim the lovely vocalist Christine in "The Phantom of the Opera" makes this a great movie choice for fans of musicals and thrillers.
15. "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown"
And finally, no Halloween would be complete without this Peanuts classic. "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" follows Charlie Brown's right-hand man, Linus, as he eagerly awaits the arrival of The Great Pumpkin, Halloween's equivalent to Christmas' Santa Claus.
