Something about horror movies is just so intriguing to me. I don't know why, but violence, blood, and ghosts gets me so excited. There are so many amazing movies in the horror genre that often get unnoticed. Here is a list of my top 15 all time favorite horror movies, ranging from the 1970s to 2016.
1. "The Exorcist" (1973)
Based on a true story, The Exorcist tells the story of a 12-year-old girl possessed by a demon, and her exorcism. Great for anyone who is interested in demons, or who just wants a really good scare.
2. "A Nightmare on Elm Street" (1984)
The story of a group of teens in the same school who are mysteriously being killed off one by one by an evil being known as Freddy Kruger. A great combination of mystery and horror.
3. "Carrie" (original, 1976; remake, 2013)
Based on the novel by Stephen King, Carrie is about a high school senior with supernatural powers. Not the scariest of horror movies, (so perfect for any scary movie beginners), but still a great plot.
4. "The Haunting In Connecticut 2" (2013)
Despite its name, "The Haunting In Connecticut 2" is actually based on a true story that takes place in Georgia. A story about a family who discovers their property was actually once an escape route for slaves during the Civil War. Not only scary, but very interesting and historical!
5. "The Haunting In Connecticut" (2009)
Actually taking place in Connecticut, "The Haunting In Connecticut" is another true story about a family who discovers their home was once a funeral parlor. As if having one spirit in your home wasn't scary enough.
6. "The Amityville Horror" (original, 1979; remake, 2005)
As a Long Islander, this movie is one of my personal favorites, since I only live about 15 minutes away from the Amityville horror house (which people still live in, by the way). This is a classic story of a family whose house is being haunted by demons, with a little bit of a twist.
7. "Insidious" (2010)
The first movie of a trilogy, "Insidious" is about a little boy whose supernatural ability to travel in his sleep leaves him lost in the paranormal world. Very different from the typical horror movie with lots of suspense! Definitely one of the scarier movies I have seen.8. "The Conjuring" (2013)
The first of two movies, The Conjuring is another true story about a haunted house in Harrisville, Rhode Island. The paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren, have worked on hundreds of paranormal cases throughout the world. Definitely a chilling story.
9. "The Conjuring 2" (2016)
Probably the scariest movie I have ever seen, "The Conjuring 2" is based on another one of Ed and Lorraine Warren's cases, and takes place in Enfield, England. The Hodgson family is not only being haunted by several demons, but their 11-year-old daughter is being possessed.
10. "Annabelle" (2014)
Another one of Ed and Lorraine Warren's cases, dealing with a woman who owned a possessed doll, and she cannot get rid of it no matter how hard she tries. May seem ridiculous, but extremely creepy.
11. "Case 39" (2009)
The story about a social services worker who falls in love with a little girl in foster care, only to discover the evil truth about her. Very scary because it seems so realistic.
12. "The Ring" (2002)
The story of an urban legend about a DVD that must be passed to someone else after viewing, or you will be sent to hell. Very different and extremely creepy.
13. "Poltergeist" (original, 1982; remake, 2015)
A family is being haunted by spirits when their daughter is taken into a portal, which the family has to go through hell in order to get to. They later find out their house is built on a former graveyard (yikes).
14. "Orphan" (2009)
The extremely creepy story about a family that adopts a little girl, and they notice weird things starting to happen around their house. Eventually, they find out a terrifying secret about their new daughter.
15. "Child's Play" (1988)
One of the most classic horror movies about a killer doll named Chucky. Extremely creepy, but also very different.
