12 Experiences Every SJU Freshman Has

It's move in day, FINALLY! Your family rolls up to Hawk Hill with a car filled to the brim with essentials to take on the real world of college. You say your goodbyes and enjoy your first moments of pure freedom. While learning the ropes of SJU and trying to understand what the "Magis" really means, you may experience some of these.

1. Eating Campion for the first time:

I think I'll just stick with a nice plate of absolutely nothing, thank you.

2. First Lion's Den Party:

Forget about the Freshman 15! I can just sweat it all out here.....what in God's name did I just step in...

3. Finding your way through Barbelin:

Okay let's see do I pick door to my left or door to my right....and now the classroom numbers aren't in order?! Who designed this place? Satan?

4. Your first Christmas Dinner:

Kinda like church during Christmas or Easter time. You have your usuals (Freshman) and the people that only come on the holidays (*cough, cough* everyone else). But who could blame them, it's the one night Camp doesn't exactly smell like feet and ketchup.

5. Eating a Hawk Wrap for the first time:

Heaven on Earth....until reality hits that you just spent $8 on a wrap with a questionable but oh so freaking delicious condiment called "Hawk Sauce". Oh well, #worthit.

6. Your first shuttle ride:

"Okay, so I know the shuttle goes to Chipotle, but which one? I hope it's this one...frick maybe not, oh well play it cool, play it cool."

7. Your first Holy War:

Get to Hagan at sun rise to get a spot in the student section or play Sardines with the other thousands of SJU students. Even though we almost never win, it's one of the most rowdy games of the year and basically social suicide if you don't attend.

8. Registering for Spring Semester classes:

The one day that "sju-wireless" seems to be run by a hamster on a wheel. May the best course code typer win.

9. The Lib during Finals Week

Look like a hobo and run like the wind because getting to Club Lib anytime after 8 am is like waiting for rain in a drought, useless and disappointing.

10. Getting Larry's after a night out:

You'll probably wait over 30 mins at 1 AM for a very less-than- average cheesesteak, but in the moment it just feels so right.

11. Wondering the streets of ole West Philly for a party:

Guys in button downs and backwards hats, and girls in crop tops and high waisted shorts carrying water bottles, gatorade bottles, iced tea bottles etc. One person leads the group with Siri guiding them to the nearest party. They all hold their heads high regardless of knowing the fact that they may be turned away at the door. "Yo, guys, is it on Woodbine, Woodcrest, or Wynnefield?" "The Den, or the Mansion?"

12. THWND

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
