When people ask me what kind of music I listen to, I never know how to respond. Frankly, I have favorites from every genre (except country. I'd rather die). I don't like to limit myself to one category and I don't care if a song is really popular or super underground. Music is music, and everyone can enjoy it. At the end of a long day, there's nothing better than playing some tunes to help you de-stress. So, I've decided to compile a small list of some songs to chill to when you want to escape. Enjoy!
1. "Art Exhibit"- Young the Giant
I had the fortune of hearing this song live and I legitimately almost cried. Young the Giant is my favorite band in the universe, and this slow acoustic jam makes me feel at peace with the world. I obviously recommend checking out any of their songs, but this is one of my favorites from their most recent album. What's better than a sweet little love song?
2. "Eyes on Fire"- Blue Foundation
Nobody judge me, but I only know this song because it was in Twilight. Those were some dark and weird times in my semi-emo adolescent stage, but this song just fills me up with some angsty feels. It's a little slow at first, but then a nice layering of vocals ensure about halfway through. If you like vampires or simple beats, take a listen.
3. "Chasing Cars"- Snow Patrol
This one is a classic, so of course it's on here. If you're like me, this reminds you of that incredibly sad scene in Grey's Anatomy that we don't talk about. Fan of Grey's or not, this song is a good one. A love song with a sad vibe. That's my kind of thing. Don't lie, I know you're singing it in your head right now. "If I lay here, would you lie with me and just forget the world?"
4. "Think About You"- Léon
I discovered this little lady earlier this year and I have been absolutely obsessed with her, even though her album hasn't come out yet. I actually prefer the acoustic version of this song because it really shows off how amazing Léon's vocals are (and they're goddamn mind blowing, might I add). I am in love with the piano and then how it gradually turns into pop without ruining the vibe. The lyrics are top notch, the vocals are top notch. I'm in love. Brb, I'm gonna go listen to it for the thousandth time.
5. "Numb"- Max Jury
First of all the light, sassy hums in the beginning are what initially drew me to this song, and it only got better from there. That little guitar solo is fantastic, and this song overall has a mellow beat to it. Also, who doesn't relate to being numb? Trust me, I was singing in this song in shower for days.
6. "Summer Friends"- Chance the Rapper
I want to start off by saying I'm not a huge rap fan. But my God, Chance is amazing. First of all, he's from Chicago so I'm genetically predisposed to love him, but he has a more chill approach to rap. Second, I'm a huge fan of craft and deep meanings, which this song has plenty of. Shootings in Chicago and police corruption? Yas, give me more.
7. "Obsessions"- Marina and the Diamonds
Marina is my favorite artist of all time: she's freaking gorgeous, her vocals are so impressive she could be an opera singer, and her songs hit me in the feels, hard. This is one of her older songs, but it takes me back to those emo days I previously mentioned. It's a little more alternative and poppy, but it's still fantastic. It's even better live.
8. "Flightless Bird, American Mouth"- Iron & Wine
This was also in Twilight (it was a fire soundtrack, okay?). Slow and sweet. It's so good it'll make you want to dance with a vampire in a gazebo under twinkling lights.
9. "Human Nature"- Gauntlet Hair
I heard this in Shameless one time and immediately downloaded it. What can I say? Raspy vocals always get me.
10. "Water"- Ra Ra Riot
Here's another indie jam to kick back and listen to. I personally think it has a cool beat and the layering of the vocals is pretty dope. But when I played in this in the car one time, my dad and sister were repulsed by it. The choice is up to you.
11. "Cigarette Daydreams"- Cage the Elephant
Honestly, where have you been living if you haven't heard this before? The guitar dances with the notes of the piano, plus the meaning of the lyrics are relatable. Even the title of the name sounds beautifully metaphoric.
12. "The Girl"- City and Colour
Just wait until you get to the end. That's when things get good.
13. "Ride"- Lana del Rey
This song is so achingly beautiful and it totally represents the semi-nomadic rebel that's hiding deep down inside of me. The music video is super long, but it's breathtaking. Also, this song may or may have not inspired my tattoo...
14. "R.I.P. To My Youth"- The Neighbourhood
The beats are quite intriguing and the lyrics! The last line sung is what really gets to me, and this makes me appreciate life a little bit while feeding into my emo days (there are way too many songs that appeal to that). "Now I'm aware in trapped in my thoughts". Ugh, been there. Super relatable.
15. "Bittersweet Symphony"- The Verve
This one's a classic. This song keeps things way too real, and I love it. Whenever I hear those first few notes, I stop whatever I'm doing and jam along. It's a little grungy, a little sad, but delivers a package of truth. It was featured at the end of the movie Cruel Intentions and honestly, this song almost brings a tear to my eye. "It's a bittersweet symphony, this life". The craft of those words are so poetic it has me shook.
