15 Alternate Lyric Experiences Of Songs Of 2015

As we ring in the new year, we're excited to say hello to the myriad of new things which the coming year will bring. We also, are able to reflect on everything that has happened in the past year, including the music. Whether it was the songs that got outplayed on the radio and we can't stand listening to anymore, or the rarely played personal favorite, music is something that will ensure to stick with us for many more new years to come. Despite this, it can definitely be hard to relate to the actions and events described in the lyrics of some of today's biggest stars. So without further adieu, here are some real life interpretations of lyrics we can all relate to.

1. "Hotline Bling" - Drake

Whether it was on T.V., at a party, in the car, or really anywhere, it seemed impossible to escape Drake's most popular song of 2015. The seemingly simple lyrics and beat has a way of sticking in our minds and not letting go. The song has even gone to inspire apparel and accessories, including ugly Christmas sweaters (which I may or may not own). However, we all may not have a "hotline bling" or maybe we didn't leave the city or maybe we do know the people our "blings" are hanging with. One thing we can all relate to however, is that that "call on the cell phone, late night when you need my love" definitely sounds a lot like our grandma or family member calling us at school to check up on us.

2. "What Do You Mean" - Justin Bieber

The Biebs made quite the extraordinary come back in 2015. Getting roasted on comedy central, leaking some personal pictures, and dropping what could be considered the hottest album of the end of the year all helped to push Justin back up to the top of the charts. Justin's new album was one he made more personal, and one if it's most popular songs "What Do You Mean?" certainly showed the personal conflict Justin had within his love life. However, its even more common that all of us at some point have probably found ourselves saying "And I just want to know, what do you mean?" while we were sitting in class and simply couldn't understand what the hell was going on.

3. "Post to Be" - Omarion ft. Chris Brown & Jhene Aiko

For me, this song was without question the token horrible and annoying rap song of the year. I guess that I can't deny that the song is catchy and definitely got all the air time it needed to become huge. I don't think many of us can relate to the outright "stealing" of someone else's partner right in front of their eyes, or the more infamous line involving groceries (hey, you do you if that's what floats your boat). One situation this song is perfectly fitting for, however, is that feeling you have right after you clean and are admiring your work. Yeah "Everything good like it post to be"

4. "Like I'm Gonna Lose You" - Meghan Trainor & John Legend

All the feels came with Meghan Trainor and John Legend's love soaked duet. These lyrics have probably had the power to make people smile, cry, laugh, or reflect. Though i do think this song is beautiful, I find myself singing it to perhaps an unimagined audience. As I throw my socks into the washer I make sure they know "I'm gonna love you, like I'm gonna lose you". Nothing's worst than losing one of your favorite socks and having the single partner left behind unusable.

5. "My Way" - Fetty Wap

Fetty Wap undeniably killed the game in 2015. From trap queen, to again, to 679, and so on, Fetty's songs were definitely popular, and received with welcome. I certainly found myself humming or embarrassingly rapping the one-eyed genius's lyrics more than once this past year, and can ensure I will be in the years to come. One place outside the areas you can commonly hear Fetty's songs that I experienced application of his lyrics is in a restaurant. We all know the feeling. We've ordered and gone through all the bread or chips on the table meant to hold us over until our food comes, and now were like a hawk searching for prey whenever we see a waiter emerge with food. In the back of our minds, I think we all have that moment when we see our waiter and simply want to scream "Baby, won't you come my way."

6. "679" - Fetty Wap

That's right. I did it. Back to back Fetty. You're welcome. Perhaps one of his harder songs to relate to, 679 is a song we've all definitely heard more than once this year. We've all screamed the lyrics and wondered what Fetty has mean by "getting soda". Except those aren't the lyrics. What Fetty actually says in his hook is "And I got this sewn up". So for anyone who has been to the hospital and gotten stitches in 2015, it might have eased your pain to look in to the doctor's eyes when their work was done and instead of an all to common thank you, simply shout "And I got this sewn up!"

7. "See You Again" - Wiz Khalifa ft. Charlie Puth

This anthem of the "Fast and Furious" series was made as a tribute to the distinguished actor, Paul Walker. This song has definitely brought a tear to many peoples' eyes and I'm sure we have all found ourselves singing along more than once. Fortunately, we all may not have had to experience the loss of someone we loved dearly. We all can relate to the line "It's been a long day, without you my friend, and I'll tell you all about it when I see you again" in the first few days when your back at school after break, and really are missing your pets.

8. "Uptown Funk" - Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars

This song definitely got everybody moving in 2015. With its awesome rhythm, fun beat, and feel-good lyrics; Uptown Funk certainly was a hit. Although the songs bridge repetitively declares that the singer is physically attractive, I've certainly found myself thinking "I'm too hot (hot damn)" with no correlation to my appearance. Instead I find myself feeling legitimately too hot, in that the sun is beating down on me or I'm caught up in some demanding physical activity. I definitely am struggling to keep cool in this situation, somewhat like another 2015 artist Alesso in his song "Cool". I also have had my share of hot drinks and foods in 2015, and may have declared "too hot (hot damn)" when trying to consume them to eagerly.

9. "I Don't Mind" - Usher ft. Juicy J

One of Usher's most unique songs, "I Don't Mind" shows that Usher doesn't care what his significant other is doing, as long as she's ultimately with him. Some of the most debatable lyrics of the song are right in the hook "I don't mind, if you work until three, if you're leaving with me." Many of the lines of the hook begin the same way with the phrase "I Don't Mind." I can't say I've been in the situation Usher has in this song, but I definitely have found myself wanting to sing his lyrics to people whenever they ask me if they can sit somewhere, borrow something, etc.

10. "B*tch Better Have My Money" - Rihanna

There's not all that much to this Rihanna hit. The song is pretty much to the point, and simply declares what the title means. Having said that, I think anyone who works for a payroll has found themselves on their way to work on payday thinking to themselves "B*tch better have my money". If not working, anyone who made a bet in 2015 also experienced this as they realized they won whatever bet they were involved in.

11. "Where Are ü Now" - Jack Ü ft. Justin Bieber

Bieber makes this list again with his early 2015 feature in "Where are you now" This song caught fire due to is electronic beat paired with Justin's voice. I'm sure we have all found ourselves relating to these lyrics when we have the gut-wrenching feeling of losing our cellular devices either out somewhere or in the couch cushions. This feeling is echoed in the lyrics "Where are you now that I need you, couldn't find you anywhere".

12. "Reflections" - Misterwives

Misterwives has been a long time favorite of mine and their song "Reflections" certainly was a hit for me in 2015. The song has great vocals and awesome musical accompaniment and it kinda just makes you happy. The song opens with the line "You didn't close the door, left a crack open I couldn't ignore." Although these lyrics prove to pertain to love throughout the song, I'm sure I'm not the only one who hates the feeling when a door is cracked open and the draft is freezing. Next time someone leaves the door open, simply turn this song on full blast and perhaps your situation will be taken care of.

13. "Jordan Belfort" - Wes Walker & Dyl

An ode to the man whose story was portrayed in the distinguished film "The Wolf of Wall Street", this song is about as catchy as they come. Unless you're living the life of a rapper, an extremely wealthy person, drug dealer, or super mogul, you probably haven't experienced a lot of things described in this song. However, the main hook states "I been getting' dirty money Jordan Belfort, stacking penny stocks while I'm flipping these birds". Hmmm, "flipping birds"... I flip birds all the time when I'm cooking chicken. Gotta make sure its cooked even through on both sides you know?

14. "Here" - Alessia Cara

Alessia Cara was a breakout artist of 2015, and for good reason. This young girl has a pretty incredible voice, and her lyrics are very honest. In her song "Here" Alessia describes feeling uncomfortable and out of place at a party. While some of us may relate to that exactly, I find that all of us can relate to this song in a different situation. "I ask myself what am I doing here? And I can't wait till we can break up outta here" is definitely a thought that has crossed my mind as I sit in a Friday afternoon lecture or seminar.

15. "Stressed Out" - Twenty One Pilots

I have to admit I'm not really sure if this fully fits the "alternate" meanings presented in this article but its definitely a relatable song. Twenty-one pilots had many hits this past year, one of which was "Stressed Out." The song presents the feeling of insecurity and how it causes stress for the singer. I'm sure we all at some point have definitely wanted to "Turn back time, to the good old days, when our mama sang us to sleep but now we're stressed out." This song serves as a reminder that everyone gets stressed.

Honorable Mentions

"White Iverson" - Post Malone

If you enjoy poor lyrics and bad rap, this song is just the one for you. If not, it can definitely still serve as a guilty pleasure song to listen to in your spare time. The opening lyrics "Saucin' Saucin' I'm Saucin' on you" are Post's way of expressing his attraction to someone, or how he's better than someone (I think? who really knows). I've definitely been "Saucin'" before but mostly just in the way that I'm "saucin'" on some food. Throw barbecue sauce, hot sauce, dressing, ketchup; all the sauces. Take that Post, I'm Saucin' too.

"Sugar" - Maroon 5

God I miss the the "Songs about Jane" era of Maroon 5, but this hit still reminds of why I like the band. Adam Levine and his band sing "Sugar" with the meaning of wanting their lovers to come and be with them. I sing "Sugar" however, when I'm really itching for some dessert or sweets. Same thing right?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
