As a girl with long and very thick hair getting my hair done turns into a day long event, especially if I want color. A lot goes through my mind as I sit in the salon chair, especially all the thoughts of what my hair could look like in the end.
1. I hope the hairdresser doesn't judge me for my split ends!
I'm a working college student so I don't get all the time in the world to get my hair cut. I also straighten my hair every day which leads to split ends everywhere. I just hope the hairdresser doesn't judge me and lets me be.
2. I have so much hair!
This one varies from person to person, but with my hair, I know once I'm in the chair and the hairdresser is about to start applying color or is simply cutting it, I know I'll be there a long while.
3. Please do not cut all my hair off.
I had a bad experience in early high school where my hairdresser accidentally cut too much of my hair off. While I liked it back then, now I look back cringing to no end. There are so many people I know and love with short hair, my mom included, but I like my length on me and I don't want it altered.
4. Small talk can be nice, but I feel so awkward.
I love natural conversation. I'm pretty good when talking to people I don't know, but if I'm in the salon chair and there feels like there's forced small talk. I feel so awkward. I just go with it and hope it ends quickly.
5. There's so much salon gossip!
Almost every time I go to the hair salon, I encounter my hairdresser gossiping about someone else who works at the salon or something wrong with the business, and it is pretty funny to hear honestly. I know the same goes on at every job, but it seems like it happens more at the salon than anywhere else.
6. What do I do when I'm waiting under the dryer?
This is the longest part of the process, and at this very moment, I am under the dryer waiting for my color to set in. Right now I have this article to write so it's keeping me preoccupied, but normally it's a struggle to find a good magazine or mindlessly scrolling through Facebook.
7. These are some interesting smells.
You get a mixed array of smells when you get your hair done, whether it's the pleasant smell of the shampoo being massaged into your hair or the assortment of chemicals being painted onto your layers, you're like a dog at a dog park trying to distinguish all the different smells going on.
8. I hope my hair turns out good!
Everyone has had their good and bad haircuts, including me. Now every time I go to the salon I pray hard that this time will turn out great like the other good times I've had getting my hair done. I don't want a hair nightmare and have to get it fixed.
9. All the hairdressers here have really beautiful hair.
As to be expected at a hair salon, the hairdressers usually have the trendiest and most beautiful hair you've seen in a while. Most likely they got it done by their coworkers in the salon, and it looks great! You feel better knowing you're in the hands of people with hair you like.
10. I love the radio in here, what station is it?
As a person who loves the current pop music on the radio, I always come to the salon and love what I hear on the radio coming through the speakers. I bet it's a station I already listen to, but I love it! More, please!
11. I must look super funny right now.
While getting my foils put on or before my hair is brushed fully or not styled (my hair can look like a lion's mane), I must look pretty silly. I hope no one really cares, mostly because they're probably getting the same exact thing done too.
12. I could get used to someone else washing my hair/doing my hair for me every day
Getting my hair washed at the salon is a strangely wonderful feeling. I love the feeling of someone massaging my head while washing my hair. Then they trim it, dry it, style it and voila! It's done and I did nothing. I have to pay (of course), but when it comes out beautiful, I wish I had my hairdresser around all the time!
13. It's pretty amazing what people will do with their hair, and for their hair
Some people will take a major risk and it will pay off, looking amazing. It's amazing what they'll do to make themselves feel more confident and look great. It's also amazing what they'll do to get there, wait three hours in the salon to get their hair colored and cut or styled. People will sometimes go multiple times a month to maintain it, and I think that's pretty remarkable.
14. This is it, the grand reveal moment!
Will I like it? Will I hate it? They're almost done styling it, and I like it! Even if you don't end up loving it, you're done and can go home after all the time you waited. Good part too is if you don't like it, you can always change it. Hair is a great way to express yourself and you have the freedom to do that however you want, whenever you want, and however frequently you want.
