In college, you'll meet many people who will take on very different roles in your life as you grow and find who you are and who you’re supposed to be over the course of four years. There’s the study partner, the one you go to for advice, the mom, the social butterfly, and others. However, there is one person that will be a mixture of all of these and even more. She's your better half, the reason you have so many amazing memories, and the reason you crawl out of bed in the morning to go to class to see her. You can never stay mad at her and she's basically you in a different person, yet you're not exactly the same. This person is your best friend, your first go-to whenever something happens, your biggest supporter and your biggest fan. Some people will meet someone and think they've met their best friend and it turns out that it really wasn’t and that's okay. It might take a while to find that person that makes your time at college so much better than before since she's one in hundreds or thousands. Whatever happens, when you do find your best friend everything just falls into place and the world just gets a little bit brighter and you’ll start to see a few things happen as time goes on.
1.) You seem to always know where the other is.
You’re seen together so often that eventually people ask you where she is or they ask her where you are. You’re both just so in-sync that it’s practically a sixth sense. Or you just talk to each other all the time but the sixth-sense sounds much cooler.
2.) Your first instinct is to tell her immediately after something happens in your life.
She’s the first to know literally everything, from how you’re feeling to how much you’re dreading the exam you have tomorrow to what you did on the Sims last night and it’s the same for her to you.
3.) She knows exactly what to say when you’re feeling down on yourself.
It doesn’t matter whether you did badly on an exam, your day has been one horrible incident after another, or you’re just having a rotten day she doesn’t like to see you sad and you know it. She always knows just what to do or say to bring up your spirits, even if it’s a quick food run or a nice text message that makes you smile. She’s always got your back.
4.) You understand each other better than anyone else.
She doesn’t like certain foods, you understand because you’re the same way. She likes ranch dressing with her pizza, you can't judge because you get barbecue sauce with your burgers. You like similar music and get excited about the same things. You have similar studying habits and often have nobody else to talk to about certain things but each other because nobody else quite understands what you mean.
5.) You balance each other perfectly.
One of you may be a socialite while the other is more of a listener. One is the life of the party while the other loves to help her shine. Either way you have a ying-yang dynamic that keeps you both from going too far to the extreme. It works flawlessly and people can’t help but wonder how you two are so close when there are so many differences, and it’s so obvious you’re perfect together that other friends start comparing themselves to the two of you based on each of your personalities when they talk about their friendships.
6.) You start acting like each other.
Eventually you start picking up each other’s mannerisms and some of the little sayings you do and even the way you speak after seeing each other so frequently. You might not notice because it was just so effortless but others on the outside likely will because you didn’t do those things before. It’s a shame you didn’t know each other longer so you could really scare people with how similar you act.
7.) You are each other’s “person”.
She’s the Christina Yang to your Meredith Grey and everyone knows it.
8.) You start missing her not even five minutes after saying goodbye for Winter Break and Spring Break and the summer and certain weekends…
Thank God for cell phones, Facebook, Skype, and visits or else there’s absolutely no chance you would ever make it.
9.) You’d do anything for her
…and you know she’d do the same for you.
10.) She’s your biggest fan and number-one supporter, and you’re hers.
You share your projects with her, only keeping them to yourself if they’re a surprise. She’s always super enthusiastic about everything you do and isn’t afraid to show it. She’s basically half of your self-esteem with how many compliments she gives even when you’re already flawless
11.) The day you became huge parts in each other’s life is remembered fondly as one of the best days ever.
If we’re really getting technical you can even remember the events of that day too, from getting dinner together in the dining hall with a few other friends to going out later the same Friday night. It’s practically a holiday for you two celebrated with cute Instagram posts and mushy captions that make everyone secretly jealous of how awesome the two of you are.
12.) You can tell her absolutely everything
…and that means everything. Boys, problems, boy problems, jokes, life happenings, even your deepest secrets that you couldn’t tell anyone before. She knows them all and you trust her with everything you have because you know she feels the same about trusting you with her own secrets.
13.) You can’t even begin to imagine life without her.
Maybe you became wicked close at a party or some other social event. Maybe you both needed lab partners one day and figured the other looked like a normal enough person. Regardless of how you entered each other’s lives she’s become a constant in your life, one that has made you wonder how you went eighteen years without her.
14.) You thought of her the whole time you read this
…and you’re pretty sure she’d think of you, too.
A best friend is your lifeline to get through life, so clearly your best friend at college is one of the most valuable human beings on the planet. A friendship like that is sacred and nothing can tear it apart. You’ll always build each other up and nothing can ever bring the two of you down.
