Waking up on the morning of the first day of class, you most likely fall into one of two categories: either you’re super excited to start a new year, or you’re miserable that your sleep has been disturbed for the start of another semester.
Whether you picked your outfit out the night before or tossed something on 10 minutes before class starts, you’re feeling good and ready to go.
After emotionally prepping for the day ahead, you’re on your way out the door, and can only hope for the best.
On your way to class, you see all sorts of people — friends you didn’t get to see over the summer, old professors you didn’t like, and the dreaded slow walkers.
Once you finally reach your classroom, seat selection is vital, and could determine how the rest of the semester in that class goes. If you’re lucky, someone you already know sits down next to you and you can bond over your shared misery of the end of summer.
For most, the first day of school marks the beginning of the legendary syllabus week, in which classes only formally exist, but with little to no actual work being done.
But there’s always that one professor who starts teaching from the moment your first class begins, assigns reading for next class and essentially ruins your hopes for an easy week before it truly begins.
In order to recover from your first morning of class, you meet up with your friends for lunch. Usually, this means hearing about what people have been up to this summer, who is in their classes, and planning your after-class adventures. At the same time, you're seeing all those people you forgot about over the summer (for good or for bad).
Despite the break, there’s still an afternoon full of activities and classes to attend to.
In order to make it through the next few hours, coffee is a necessity, especially for those who never woke up before 9 a.m. this summer. (Special shout out to all you slumber superheroes, you're the real MVPs).
By mid-afternoon, you’re ready for a nap (coffee or not), and if you’re going to rally before heading out tonight, you’ll definitely need to catch some z's.
After the long first day of classes is over, you’re ready for a fun night out with your friends, and with syllabus week off to a good start you head out.
Though the dread of waking up in the morning briefly crossed your mind, it’s no match for the excitement that comes with being back on campus with your best friends.
And no matter how you felt about starting classes, it was all worth it to be back for another year.
Happy syllabus week to all, and may the odds be ever in your favor.
