In high school, it was common knowledge that Greek life in college was all about horrific hazing and what seemed to be a glorified cluster of rich kids who drank all day. But, when you actually get to college it is much different than what the movies portray it as.
1. They are your second family.
Being in Greek life has a genuine purpose. It's not "paying to have friends". When you join Greek life, you are creating a social network that can open hundreds of doors for you in the future and help you meet people that you can count on for your entire life.
2. They will support you through anything.
Everyone makes mistakes, we're humans. The Greek community will be there to catch you when you fall and provide you with the best advice to get you back on your feet.
3. It is more than likely you will find your soul mate best friend.
It's normal to be shy and you'll be surprised to hear how many people feel like they don't have a real connection to anyone on campus. In Greek life, the sororities are a mix of every kind of person so it's basically guaranteed you'll find your legitimate best friend forever.
4. The community service is rewarding.
Community service is usually a mix of dread and awkwardness when you do it alone. But when you have a giant group of people with you, that you enjoy being with, it makes the experience so much better.
5. Keeps you on your toes.
Sororities usually have a GPA requirement and their own set of standards when it comes to education and even the law. If you fail a class or do something out of line, you will feel like you're disappointing your mother. This certainly helps motivate you to be street and book smart.
6. Gives you a reason to dress up.
Chapter style is exciting because everyone looks so nice and it's like a small business meeting, but less black and grey. Plus, you learn about some nice new stores and you can see a shopping trip on your horizon.
7. You'll never be alone.
Hungry but have no one to eat with? Ask a sister. Want to go to the library but afraid to walk back alone at night? Ask a sister. Can't think of something witty to text your crush? Ask a sister.
8. Sharing is caring.
If your ball is coming up and you just aren't feeling your prom dress anymore, your sisters will definitely have something for you to borrow. Or if your starving and your meal plan is running low, they will lend you some of their meal swipes.
9. They are there to help you grow.
As sisters, we must help each other be the best and strongest woman we can be. Through tears, triumph, and love you will get where you need to be.
10. Events.
You don't know fun until you're in a group of 80 women that are all gushing over the college's attractive President and giving him a glitter tattoo.
11. It's not just your organization.
In some way, all of the sororities on campus are mingled together and this helps create the electric atmosphere at Greek events and what really draws you in on the fun.
12. Rituals.
The little secret things your organization does at chapter or during the new member process can be so quirky or super serious but either way they're intriguing.
13. The crafting.
You will be on a first name basis with the employees at Michael's. Exchanging crafts with your big/little or just another sister is like waking up on Christmas morning. Also, the gift bags are cute as hell too.
14. Big/Little reveal.
There is not a single word that could describe your emotions of reveal. You could go from laughing, to loss of breath, to screeching with excitement, to crying, to laughing again in the span of 15 seconds.
