Throughout high school, I was heavily involved in my school's choir program. Once I got to college and talked about choir with other people, I realized that a lot of the things that my choir director said weren't just specific to our choir room, but comments made universally. So, I've composed a list of sayings you've probably heard if you were a choir kid in high school.
1. "Let's go over that alto section again."
I don't mean to be shady or anything, but that was definitely a trend in class.
2. "No eating in class!"
3. "Don't forget to have tall vowels!"
4. "Let's only have the Soprano Ones sing that part."
5. "You all need to blend more. I shouldn't hear any individual voices!"
6. "No talking, even if I'm not working with your section right now."
7. "If we're going to incorporate movement, make sure we're all moving together!"

8. "We need to make sure our sound is uniform."
9. "I'll wait."
The infamous "I'll wait" can be absolutely deadly in the right situation. Whenever we would talk over our director, she'd utter those two words and the classroom would become instantly silent. It's a powerful phrase that should be used sparingly.
10. "[Voice section], I can't hear you over [other voice section]."
11. "Let's sight-sing the whole piece before we do anything else with it!"
12. "...Let's run that again."
We all know that tone your director gets when you're running a piece and it doesn't sound the least bit pleasant. However, don't get that phrase confused with:
13. "One more time!"
14. "Seniors...this is your last performance. Make it count."
I don't know about any of you, but that phrase never failed to make me tear up during my senior year. Choir was such a positive experience for me, and it's nice to know that it's so impacting for other people as well.
