14 Lessons My Mother Taught Me

When life gives you lemons, do something great.

14 Lessons My Mother Taught Me
Jondi Cole

My mother, bless her, somehow survived raising me. But, in all seriousness, she is one of my best friends and someone who I hope I don't bug because I ask her so many things still to this day. If you are close to any of your parents or caretakers, maybe you can relate.

1. Life is unpredictable.

Just because it is not easy does not mean it's the worst thing to happen to you. Life can be much like driving on South Carolina's roads. You just have to tough it out.

2. You will make mistakes.

No one is perfect, and mistakes are a natural part of life. Learn and grow from them.

3. You can't excel at everything.

Not everyone can paint or draw, just as some people were not meant to be chefs. Trying is better than doing nothing at all sometimes, but if it isn't meant to be, then maybe try to master something else. And don't feel too bad in the end. At least you tried.

4. Don't take other people's crap.

Some people are not worth the headaches. And, as blunt as that is, it's true. If you know someone is lying, call it out, or make sure to make a mental note. You don't need to put up with everyone and their drama.

5. Being tough is not everything.

You can be tough and emotional, as well as tired. We are human and feel what we feel. Let it out, you are still as tough crying as you are telling someone off.

6. Honesty is the best policy.

We all have our breaking points, and my honesty goes from polite and blunt to harsh real quick if I'm messed with. Mom was always honest with me, and I try to stay as real as possible.

7. Even hard subjects can be explained to kids.

Is it age appropriate? Okay then. Even five-year-olds can understand the most controversial topic. Open communication isn't a bad thing.

8. Kindness and respect matter.

Unless they are hurting someone, maybe it isn't your business. Not agreeing doesn't mean you can be a jerk, for lack of better words. Stay kind and treat others well.

9. Go with your gut.

Sometimes you just know, even if you don't want to admit it. Trust yourself.

10. Love is never easy.

Love is complicated and has its ups and downs. It takes time to find someone you really want to be around forever. Be patient and learn from failed attempts.

11. Ask for help.

Being independent can sometimes be great, but don't forget that you are not the master of all. Never be afraid to ask for help.

12. Protect those you love.

Whether it is family or friends, or even an animal, if you are lucky enough to have great relationships, savor them. Protecting them matters. No one comes after my family, no one.

13. Take care of yourself.

You cannot love anyone else until you love yourself. And taking care of yourself is a must. How else are you going to learn how to be a functional person? Your health matters!

14. Don't settle.

This doesn't mean to be an absolute nightmare. It means to go above and beyond and be firm in what you want. Have some goals and strive for them.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
